Sharing Printer on XP desktop with Vista Laptop

I have a desktop with XP Pro with a HP LaserJet 1018 connected to it and am trying to share it with a Vista laptop setup on a home network. I can print but do not have the functionality that comes with the driver when connected via USB cable. Specifically, I am trying to use the print on both side from the laptop. It prints one side, but will not prompt me to change paper orientation or to hit continue to print like when I print locally. I reinstalled the drivers from the HP website but no luck. Any idea how I can get the printer to work wirelessly the same as when hooked up directly?

Thank you.

Hi, theking, and welcome to the forums.

Did you install the software for Vista and specify that you are printing wirelessly, or is it printing through the network?

Re: Sharing Printer on XP desktop with Vista Laptop

Yes I first installed the software using the CD that came with the printer. Then I went on the hp website and downloaded the Vista version on to the laptop. In neither case would it work unless I connected the laptop directly to the printer. The printer is printing through the network, through the desktop which it is directly hooked up. Thanks.

Re: Sharing Printer on XP desktop with Vista Laptop

Make sure that the XP machine is actually sharing out the printer, and make sure the Vista machine can actually see the XP machine

Re: Sharing Printer on XP desktop with Vista Laptop

If you cant see the XP machine download and install the Link-Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD)

Microsoft Windows link to download the LLTD update (KB922120)

I aint no expert, I know a lot of you guys are though and this is probably already known but the LLTD fix sorted my XP machines perfectly. I could see them but not connect to them until I installed it on both my XP machines.

Now I can see the XP machines from my Vista Laptop and vice versa.

Re: Sharing Printer on XP desktop with Vista Laptop

I can see the XP machine on my network and can fully access the its folders. Again, what is happening is that when I print to the printer connected to it using the two-sided option, the printer hangs after printing side one and there is no prompt to continue. Should I not have the full function of the printer from my remote (Vista) computer?

Thanks.

Re: Sharing Printer on XP desktop with Vista Laptop

It could just be that you have not got the software installed on the vista machine,

Did you install the software or just add a networked printer?

On mine I just added a networked printer, vista found the print driver and I can print but I had to install the printer status monitor software on my vista machine before I could use and of remote functions like checking ink levels,

As I said before I aint no expert and I may be barking up the wrong tree entirely.

Please keep me informed.

Re: Sharing Printer on XP desktop with Vista Laptop

That might be it as well - and also, have you checked for the latest firmware of the printer?
