Hi, robertmatthewclarke, and welcome to the forums.

First off, a little word of advice. When you type things on the net, it is hard to show emphasis as you would by raising your voice - so the convention has become that to show / indicate shouting one uses all capital letters.

However, unless you really mean to shout at us, I would advise that you do not do that - it is considered poor manners and will usually result in most folks not trying to help you.

That being said, do you have RD set to allow incoming connections? Are you behind a firewall / broadband router? Do you have a firewall (software) installed on your computer?

Sorry Sorry Sorry

I am new to this forum stuff i didn't realise about the caps lock thing. Firstly thankyou for replying to me secondly What is RD?

Just to clarify, I tried asking her for remote assistance and it worked she could see my screen and control the mouse and keyboard. The problem is with her asking me for remote assistance, on my machine (VISTA) i get the programme load up and it says attempting to connect. On her machine (WINXP) she gets NO message that says do you want blah blah to see your screen.

In my machine i am running Norton internet security and windows firewall.

robertmatthewclarke, at this point johngalt was using "RD" as an abbreviation for Remote Desktop. It is the program that enables Windows computers to connect to one another and exchange what's displayed on the screen.

You need to check your settings for Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance and make sure that you are "allowing" incoming connections. You should also attempt to allow Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance through your firewall and router (I assume you have a router since you stated you have more than one computer in your home).

To allow Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance through your router, you will need to "forward" the required ports. There is a great resource on doing that (and allowing programs through your firewall) here:

i don't know if this helps but i got a successful remote assistance connection from my windows XP pc to the othe rmachine, it appears the fault is only on my vista laptop.

Do i still need to forward

What are all of the Operating Systems in question? For instance, what OS is your mother in law using? What OS are you using when trying to assist her?

If you mean that you got a successful connection between both of YOUR computers, yes you still need to forward the ports. Your router does not "filter" network activity between computers in the same house on the same network as much as it "filters" internet connections.

So when you're using your Desktop (with Windows XP) she can ask you for assistance, and it works? If this is the case, can't you help her using your XP machine? Why do you NEED to use your Laptop (with Vista) to help her?

Good point however "MY" winxp machine was only home for a short time, it is actualy my office machine that i brought home to format and reboot whilst we were on break from work. It is now back at work so here i am stuck with pokey laptop that won't do what i want it to!

My Computer

yes it worked when i used that winxp machine and she asked for assistance.

My vista laptop also works but only if i ask her for assistance. If she asks my vista laptop for assistance it never establishes a connection

Hm, that basically rules out network issues then. So your router should be fine at this point, however it could still be your Firewall or other security settings. Check to see if Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop are allowed through your Windows Firewall, if not you need to let it.

Go to the Start menu and type "firewall", click on Windows Firewall. From there click on "Allow a program through Windows Firewall" and make sure that "Remote Assistance" and "Remote Desktop" are listed and checked.

If you have another firewall check it's settings as well.
