Please help... random internet freezes

I have this problem.. I think it has been happening since I upgraded from xp but its been so long I cant remember. Its really starting to drive me crazy as it seems to be happening to more things. I can recreate it for someone anytime if you have any ideas for how I could maybe diagnose it.. steaming video works like a charm.. and certain games with voip software will do it lickity split. There used to be this game bf2 where it never froze and now its starting to do it too. ... if left sitting alone I have looked at a thing that measures packet errors and it never hiccups. It seems the more bandwidth I use the more it occurs although I have been doing very light things and its happened before but at a much less freqent rate. I have the latest bios network/mobo gfx and sound card drivers.. the reliability and proformance monitor thing never has any errors related to the hiccups. I have used the monitor thingie and set it for packet errors / packets per sec and really did not notice and patterns.
This is the umpteenth place I am trying for help.. like I said if you have any ideas I can recreate it easily..

OK, you provided a lot of info, but is the game freezing the only thing that is occurring? Or when you mentioned the VOIP part is that a symptom of the problem as well, as in it happens lickity split meaning it freezes lickity split?

It can happen during anything really. Steaming video , no matter what site.. well make that flash anything really.. sites with a lot of images/content or if I am loading multiple regular pages. The game thing I mentioned voip about was UO because it happens at a much less frequent rate if I do not have the voip going too. bf2 it used to never happen but maybe once a week or so voip or not but now it is out of control with/without voip going too.


When it happens my system freezes for about 1 second whether I am in any game or on my desktop or on youtube or something. I lose connectivity just prior to that freeze and it picks back up about 1 second after. I never had the problem with xp about a year ago and don't use a router.

Oh and my old roommate had a computer similar to mine and when we did have a router and he had vista too and it did not happen to him.

lickity split was just how fast I can recreate it under certain conditions.. all I have to do is load up a streaming video.. or a few web pages at once.

I changed my rwin and other settings and it did not help either :( also forgot to mention if it happens enough in a short period I have to reset the network adapter or the modem sometimes for it to work again

yeah, the chance seems to grow the more bandwidth / packets I use. ( what it seems like anyways )

is there any way to see like exactly whats going on when I disconnect other than that graph thingie

Rest all your settings for Vista to default - Vista is not XP and it does not need tweaked RWIN or any other settings.

any other ideas then ? :( I tried watching a packet sniffer but I got really confused. I used to have this thing that watched programs for api calls but don't remember the name. Would something like that tell me whats causing it ?

A packet sniffer is of no value becuase you're having *pauses* - a time when no packets are being transmitted - so sniffing at nothing is not going ot be very productive.

And I made a suggestion but you never answered that.

I reset them back I had some program from speedguide.net that made it easy :( still same thing

I did not think of that :( What I was looking for was some sort of error packet just before it happened but nothing.

This sounds like a faulty USB port to me
I have a pc that recently suffered from this kind of problem
simply one of the USB ports on the front became damaged as soon as i disconnected them from the mother board the pc became 100% stable again

Give Speed Test - dslreports.com a try and see what you latency is
if its exceeding triple digits it could be that you network card is bad
its worth a shot:)

I just wanted to let anyone out there with this problem it was fixed by buying a PCI network card 100%. It must have been a faulty network interface thingie on my motherboard.
