desktop weblink icons keep changing

I keep a number of weblinks on my desktop. For easy identification, i change the look of the icons using the Web Documents Tab in the Properties window. I replace the IE file icon with icons i've downloaded and some i've constructed. I keep these in a C:\Icons folder. Sometimes, some of the the icons (for no apparent reason) change back to the IE file icon without any action from me. When i pull up the Properties window, the icon i chose is still showing in the title bar and the window, yet the desktop is showing the IE file icon.
Weird, eh?
If i change the icon using the one from the default DLL (%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll) and click Apply, the desktop icon will change and stay that way. Yet, if i then change the icon again by clicking Browse, navigating to my folder on C:, then clicking Apply, the desktop icon will once again show the IE file icon and the Properties window title bar and window will once again show my chosen icon. Right back were i was to begin with.
Weirder. eh?
Sometimes, the icons will stick for weeks until i add another desktop weblink and choose an icon for it. When i go back to the desktop, the new icon will show my change, but some other weblink icon will have reverted back to the IE file icon. Or, an icon that reverted to an IE files icon (and i got tired of of trying to change it) will change to the icon of my choice!?!?!?
That is the weirdest...
Anyone have the same issues? Any suggestions? Thanx

Hello Stlcardsfan,

The icons you are using may not be 256x256 bit icon files for Vista. When they are not displaying like they should, change the icon View size to Classc to see if they afterwards. If they do, then you do not have the correct icon file type.

This tutorial may help you out some more.

Hope this helps,

Thanx for your help, Brink! I looked for a tutorial like this, but I missed it. Method 2 works best for me (although, being a (somewhat) presbyopic old fart I may need to increase the DPI system-wide anyway). The funny thing is, the icons I downloaded are supposed to be made just for Vista from vistaicons.com. Ha! :D

Your welcome Stlcardsfan.

LOL, isn't funny how the icons never seem to be for Vista. :)
