Yes. It is a good router. I use it. What is your OS? Did you configure it yet?

I am using it right now and have been since I built my x64 machine 2 months ago....

And the reason D-Link doesn't *clearly* state OS compatibility is that if you use the easy setup software you *may* run into issues - but as I log into the router itself and manually adjust my settings from there (and I don't use the built-in wizard either) it works just fine.

I could use it with Solaris if I wanted to - Windows 95 - any computer that will be using standard TCP/IP for Internet access and / or local LAN access.

And the firewall is top notch - I am routinely submitting (to DShield) between 800 and 1300 individual hits attempted on my IP by various botnets trying to get in - using the DShield client and a free Syslog Server that monitors for the Syslog messages coming from the router.

Oh, and I am hitting speeds as high as 25 Mbits/s through it as well. It really does it's job well.

YMMV.

i'm currently on xp86 but i'm having problems so i want to try vista64

1-connection dropped often daily on v.1.7 and went back to v1.6 where it still happens but less frequently: once every 1-2days with the "advanced wireless fix tab"

Fragmentation Threshold :2100
RTS Threshold :2100
Beacon Period :80
DTIM Interval :1
802.11d Enable : unchecked
Transmit Power :high
WDS Enable : unchecked

2-file transfer over wireless extremely slow from this PC (marvell yukon pci gigabit ethernet controller) to dell laptop (1490 dual band wlan mini-card 54mb/s on vista86)

slow = 10mb/s max and varies constantly, 700mb file takes 30mins if i'm lucky (while accessing the router from my browser the transfer basically dies -15kb/s)
with overhead a 54mb/s wireless laptop card should do much more than that right?

*should* - but it depends on what the wireless card is actually connecting at - if it is connecting at 802.11b speeds (11mb/s which is right in the range you're saying) then I can easily see the connection dying.

I had similar issues with a WAP that only ran 802.11b connections and an iMac - as soon as I replaced the router with a LinkSys Wireless G router and the iMac was able to negotiate a true Wireless G connection, all transfer problems went away.

Also, just so you know, the latest firmware for the DGL-4300 is 1.8:

i think you're right it must be using 802.11b

-in my basic wireless settings it was b and g (i'll force g only now)
-transmission rate is on automatic aka best (i'll force 54Mb/s)

i was aware of the v1.8 firmware but that was pulled down very quickly, must be for a good reason?

and there was also an unofficial v1.9 that was causing problems i hear

the consensus was v1.6 is the most reliable.

so you're saying you actually downgraded to a weaker router to fix your issues? that's sad.

just like i thought, even while forcing g/54 there's a marginal improvement, i might see it pop to 17Mb/s for a second but still goes to 5-10 every 2 seconds

No, This was at work, and it was definitely an upgrade from the 802.11b WAP made by Cisco - g is better than b, even if it *is* Linksys :P

Oh, and thanks for telling me about the 1.8 being pulled - when I updated it it was there and it showed for at least 5 months - I haven't looked for a newer version since the router keeps saying it is the latest version.

I may downgrade to 1.7 / 1.6 - if you could point me to articles explaining why 1.8 was pulled, and why 1.6 is more stable than 1.7?

NM - I can Google :P

I've changed all my hardware now and i'm still having the same router issues.

on vistax64 with new asus p5k se/epu

D-link support is really a joke...don't even bother.

I don't know what i should do anymore...

So should i just leave WPA/TKiP and never power down for the best possible stability?

I read all the articles about 1.8 having a security issue, but I have yet to be hacked, and on top of that, I am not getting dropped packets.

Also, this router services 4 computers, with an occasional 2 more wirelessly, and never has any issues.

If you want I can send you the 1.8 and you can test it. However, be warned that I changed both my admin and user PWs every time I get a router, so that may be why there is no security issue on my end...

Best $130.00 I've ever spent.

I had heard they pulled 1.8, but it's been out for damn near a year now? I had not heard why either. Rumors of 1.9 were around dsl reports, but that was 3 or 4 months ago. I personally had no issues with what came stock, 1.6, 1.7 or 1.8.

Something like that... I forgot where I got it, Tiger or newegg, but with shipping it came in just under $130.00. Guess I got lucky on one of those 1 day x-mas deals they sometimes throw up?

Considering the fights over the internet the wife and I no longer have, I'd have happily thrown out another $30.00-$50.00 for this thing.. and by "fights" what I really mean is me looking over my shoulder begrudging my wife for deciding that "game time" is the perfect time to browse the entire Macy's catalog. lol Cowardice, sure, but at least I didn't have to sleep with one eye open. :D

I have version 1.9 installed on my DGL-4300. I believe it is a BETA version. I've had no problems and it seems to have cut down on a lot of my wireless errors. I believe I have an error rate of about .5% versus over 1% with version 1.8.

Also, as far as getting the fastest speeds, I've found locking in the router at speeds under 54mbps actually performs faster than setting it for the highest speed. FWIW, I found the 24/48 setting consistently copied large files faster across my network.

My Computer

How do you lock it under 54mbps? Just by switching it to say G instead of using N? Sorry im new to this router lol.

The DGL-4300 is only 802.11b and g. Unless there is a new version, mine does not support 802.11n. To lock the speed, I log into the router, select BASIC at the top, then on the left side select "Wireless Settings". I disable "Super G Mode", set "208.11 mode" to 802.11g only and set the transmission rate to "24 [48]".

I live in an apartment complex and I'm in range of about 10 other networks. These settings work best for me. YMMV.
