Router randomly dissconnects.

Ok, my friend asked me a few days ago to help him fix his router. Its a Belkin N1.

It keeps knocking of at random times every few minutes. I have tried everything I know to solve the problem but nothing seems to work. He can connect to his neighbours internet and it stays connected but when he connects to his own it goes offline after a few mins.

Any suggestions on how to help him?
Thanks

I am having a similiar problem with my Linksys by Cisco. Happens about
once a day. I reset the router and it is ok. Talked with LinkSys and they
say that its a software problem. Have not got around to checking the
software problem . Good Luck hoope you get it fixed soon.

Re: Router randomly dissconnects.

To the original poster, it would also help to know what brand of cable or DSL modem is in use, as some brands of modems, espicially cable modems made by AMBIT frequently have this problem.

Also note, that some of Belkin's routers, espicially their wireless G routers, do tend to over heat and disconnect. Check with Belkin, you might need to update your friend's router firmware.

Hey Johngalt, Can you explain how to check what Cable / DSl modem. He knows nothing about IT at all and im pretty sure he will ask me how to check.

While you are at it, how do you check wireless cards too?

Sorry about asking for all this, hardware isn't a strong point of mine.

Thanks for the reply

Re: Router randomly dissconnects.

The Cable modem is like any other device - it has a name on it and underneath it it has a sticker with model # and serial #, almost always.

Re: Router randomly dissconnects.

No worries. Not sure if that is really going to make a difference - but I will say that Belkin routers are much more prone to go haywire than others - I have run into more problems solved with the replacement of a Belkin with a good Linksys or D-Link (my personal recommendations, but it also depends upon their existing hardware - if they have all Linksys wireless cards, by all means go with Linksys - mixing brands is not a good thing.

Speaking of which, what brand wireless cards do they have as well?
