10\100\1000mbps router

Will I see a significant increase in speed if I go from a 10\100 router to a 10\100\1000 router. Would it be worth it to upgrade the router. How would I check to see if my computer is capable of handling a 1 gigabyte router.

Define speed.

You have to remember how the connections work. A 1 GB router will offer 1 GB connections to whatever connects to it - but if your *modem* does not support a 1 GB connection, it sill fall back to whatever it *does* accept.

Gigabit Ethernet is good for *LANs* - IOW the speed between networked computers. I have a serious doubt that you'll get anything faster from your Internet connection - I can get 20+ Mbps on a regular 100 Mbit router - although I have a Gigabit router for my LAN, it does not change the speeds at all from my ISP.

You want a faster speed, pay the ISP more money to get faster speeds. I am paying them the max I can without having a business account.

OK thanks that clears alot up for me. My next question is: How do I find out what my modem can handle. My isp is RR and it is at 7mb, when checking speed at speednet, it's at 6901mbps. So my speed is right on target. Thanks again.

That would be up to them, or you can research the specifications of your modem online by searching for the modem manufacturer and model number.

In general, though, Speeds below 10 Mbps will usually have a modem connecting at 10 Mbps, although some newer modems may support up to 100 Mbps. It is simply not financially practical for broadband companies to ship out modems that have a built in Gigabit port as no broadband service yet offers anything above 100 Mbps to the customer, or at least AFAIK.

I doubt youl gain any speed increase at all. When you think that even 10mb modem is more than the vast majority of internet packages offered by ISPs you wont gain much in that regard by going 1gb. However if you want faster lan connection and transfer lots of files, then yes it would be worth your investment.

Thanks Johngalt and swarfega, your info was very helpful. I did some googling and found that you guys where right. My modem only supports 10\100 and my ISP is not comming out with a gigabit modem as of yet. So my new question is: If this is not supported as a majority, then why are computer manufactures installing the gigbit NIC card. Do they know some thing we (I) don't know.
