Slow internet connection

I have Vista x64 Ultimate and I'm having internet connection issues. My laptop is the HP Pavillion dv7. My ISP tells me everything is fine on his end.

I have a router (Linksys model BEFW11S4) 2.4 Ghz - 802.11b.

When I connect the wire from my modem directly to my laptop, I get internet speeds of 900 Kbps. But when I use the router, the speed goes down to 300 Kbps.

Is there a setting in Vista that could be doing this? According to Linksys, I should be able to attain 900 Kbps with the router.

The laptop comes with a wireless adapter (Intel Wi-Fi Link 5100AGN).

Help !

hmm. Well i would personally first do this. Right click on your the internet window (the one with the globe) and select network and sharing center. Then click on Manage Network connections and then right click on one of the two connections (only one should give you this choice to my knowledge) and hit properties. From there youll see a list of things that are checked and just uncheck the QOS packet scheduler. That sets aside 20% of your bandwidth for microsoft updates etc. I hope that helps!

QoS only sets aside 20% to be used ***when there is a QoS scheduling device present*** that asks for that bandwidth.

XP and Vista do not lock you out of that 20% - you can use 100% of your bandwidth ***until a QoS device calls for that bandwidth for its own purposes***

If you are not in a corporate network, I am pretty sure you won't have a QoS device asking for that 20% that is reserved.

masterjego, you need to seriously read this post: http://www.vistax64.com/vista-news/172399-performance-tweaking-myths.html#post796979

In fact, you should read the entire topic....

I would kind of doubt it. If you use a modem or whatever try to direct connect it to your pc. (youll probably have to reboot it though). See if your speed goes up then. If your provider still claims the problems on your end i would first try checking for adware and viruses (AVG, Spybot search and destroy, etc.) Heres a list (Antivirus, Firewall, & Spyware - Free Software Downloads and Software Reviews - Download.com). If after you do a couple of scans with a couple of the programs i would then get a new modem which you could get for about 80 bucks or so. Best one i know of is the Motorola Surfboard. I have never had problems with this modem. I had one start to die on me a couple months ago but at that time it was about 2-3 years old so it was expected.

But the problem isn't my modem. As I mentioned at the beginning of the thread, when I connect my modem directly to my laptop, the speed is at 900Kbps (I'm happy with this) but when I connect my modem to my wireless router and have my laptop connect wirelessly, the speed goes down to 300Kbps. How can I use my wireless router so that I can go back to 900 Kbps?

Thanks

Hmm thats weird. I dont know much about wireless issues like that. Only thing i can think of is that your wireless inside your laptop is wack or the wireless router is extremely cheap. Btw John funny i did a speedtest and was only getting 11Mb which is a lot slower than it usually is. I check the QOS (i didnt have any pending updates or anything) and it was turned on. I disable it check the speed again and it doubled. Weird eh.

Is it possible to connect the router to your laptop by cable and if it is, what speed do you get?

Best and Warm Regards
