I have to delete the affected favourite sites then 'delete all' from internet properties then add the sites again.

Is there a fix for this?

Will do next time it happens.

Hi ElBeasto,

This tutorial may help you out. It will show you how to reset the Favorites favicons.

Thanks for the link. I suppsoe the only difference between that tutorial and what I was already doing is that I was deleting the affected favourite/s as well and that is unnecessary. Oh and you only have to delete files not all.

Cheers.

ElBeasto,

True, but it's just easier to just delete all of the Temporary Internet Files, unless needed, than each affected favicon file one by one. ;)

I took a screen shot of the bug in action, in this case the affected favourite is using an existing favicon from my favourites list but usually it's just a random icon from some site that I've browsed.

faviconbug.jpg

The westpac licon should look like this:

faviconbug0.jpg

In C:\Users\<me>\Favourites the icons are all correct and I didn't see any favicons at all in the Temporary Internet Files folder.

Also, to get that particular icon back, I had to delete all internet files and the favourite itself then re-add it before it would show correctly. Usually it comes back is I just delete files.

maybe IE8 won't do this...

Cheers

These favicons kept changing every day, to the point where I just left it as is. After a day or two IE7 had a popup say to fix itself or something and all the favicons went back to normal...

Another Vista WTF?! moment?

Elbeasto,

I have my IE set to empty the temp files on exit (Tools, Internet Options, Advanced tab, check box under Security section) , to force it to reload these favicons. This way if they get corrupted they and mixed up, I know that they will be reset the next time I close and reopen IE.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Well they seem to be behaving themselves without that option checked since that IE fix dialog came up, so I'll just leave it for now. If it comes back then yeah I'll use that option.

I just noticed all my favicons screwing up again after veiwing a gif form an msn shared folder. The default program for gifs in vista is IE, could that be a cause?

Sorry to keep on about this but I just increased my IE Temp cache size from 50mb to 1024Mb and the favicons came good again. There was about four that were out of whack.

Could cache disk space be a cause?

It could not hurt. The cache is used to store the IE Temp files which is where the favicons are stored. Increasing the size of the cache will allow more to be store in it to help prevent a older favicon from being deleted when space runs out.
