Vista SP1 installed lost VPN functionality

My computer finally automatically installed SP1, after months of trying to do it manually and getting lots of blue screen errors and giving up.... the install was fine, but I've lost my wireless broadband vpn connection (with a Huawei E220 usb modem). After some research it seems it's a network adapter issue, and sure enough in device manager I have errors with the WAN miniport Network monitor and SSTP adapters. The properties for the network monitor adapter come up with the following error: This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)
On the SSTP adapter it has been disabled and now if I attempt to do anything to it, like uninstall or update I get blue screen errors. Windows support site says that these errors can be ignored and isn't really an error, but my lack of vpn connection says otherwise. I have downloaded devcon but it won't work on my computer (vista basic). The only other fix I've found referred to involves uninstalling SP1, which I'd prefer to avoid if I can but will if I have to.

The event log has thousands of the following entries - every minute the computer is running:
The Remote Access Connection Manager service depends on the Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service service which failed to start because of the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions on a fix.
Cheers,
K.
