| Windows 7 RC x64 Vista HP x86 | Re: Connect mac pro to PC via cat5 cable you could use a crossover cable between the mac and pc which would give you connectivity - share files etc (file system allowing of course) not certain if it would then be possible to use the PC as an internet gateway but should be possible in theory , if you set the pc to be the gateway for the mac and point all other things DNS etc to your router. it may work I think thats all ICS used to do Will have a look and see if I can find a definitive answer. Update Have a look at the explanation Here good news is it should work Connect the mac and pc with a crossover Ethernet cable and enable ICS on the windows box and should work. | Vista Ultimate 32bit/ Mac OS X 10.5.5 | Re: Connect mac pro to PC via cat5 cable Ah yes thank you. this is exactly the answer i was looking for. but it shouldn't slow down my connection right? since they're both going through one wireless adapter? |

| Windows 7 RC x64 Vista HP x86 | Re: Connect mac pro to PC via cat5 cable technically It may effect your Internet speeds depends on how the system will be used it depends on the relative speeds of the components in your system and the amount of bandwidth available, and the use it is being put to if we assume an 8 meg internet connection and 802.11g (54Meg) wireless and a 100Meg Ethernet connection. the bottleneck is obviously the 8meg internet connection so if the user on the windows PC is streaming HQ video that is using 6Meg of the bandwidth then the mac user will only have 2Meg to use max, saying that in normal use Web Surfing Email etc I doubt if one user will be aware of the other. There will be a small overhead on the windows machine to run the ICS software but I doubt if this will be noticeable. Obviously if you have a 30meg internet connection and only run 10 meg Ethernet connection then the MAC will be slower than the Windows machine. (limited to 10meg) I share a 2Meg Internet connection, (via a Router), and have noticed that if my better half is watching streamed tv soaps then pages will seem a little slower to load but do not see any noticable degredation under normal conditions. hope this helps and clarifies |
