Vista linux file sharing!

I've got a file in my vista /public/video folder and everytime I try to copy it to my linux box it keeps asking for a password. i've turned off the password protection in Vista, so what do I do?

thanks

Ok, it turns out that Nautilus (a commonly used linux file manager) cannot access Vista shared folders, it's a bug. It has no trouble with accessing Xp shared folders.

Also, copying files from Vista is SLOW, about half the speed of Xp and linux.

Re: Vista linux file sharing!

Set your shared folder to give Everyone All access in the Share permissions. That should take care of your first problem.

Your second problem... Vista has known issues when it comes to SMB/CIFS with non-Vista or Server2008 systems. Service Pack 1 fixed some of these issues, but far from all of them.

If you have a gigabit network, you might experiment with jumbo frames.

You can try turning auto-tuning on/off. I've read reports of that helping, though it's never done anything for me. Here is Brink's guide for that:
Auto Tuning - TCP/IP receive level

ps. If you come across a solution that works for you, make sure to post it here, so we can add to our collective knowledge!

Re: Vista linux file sharing!

I've been copying files from my Vista desktop to my Xp laptop then finally to my linux HTPC.

Can Vista actually slow down the entire network? I'm copying 700Mb movie files and this used to take a little over 2mins for each file. Now, from Vista to Xp over 4mins, from Xp to linux well over 6mins!

I tried doing as the Auto Tuning turtorial suggested but it didn't improve performance at all.

I think a large flash drive or external HDD might be the next step as Vista's network performance is far too slow for big media files.

Not unless you're doing all this network activity simultaneously.

Yeah, I'm not surprised. Still, it seems to work for some people, so it was worth trying.

I dunno what to tell you. The Vista machines we have in the office play well with each other and the Win2008 server... but are dog slow moving files to the older machines.

At home, I have much the same scenario: Vista is about 2x or 3x slower than XP when I move files back and forth on my NAS.

I wish I had a solution for you. I wish I had a solution for myself...

Anyone else want to take a stab at this?

Re: Vista linux file sharing!

In an attempt to speed things up, I copied an 800Mb movie from Vista to a flash drive, it took about 6mins! From the flash drive to Xp, less than 2mins.

I just find it hard to believe that a new OS can be this bad. I even waited until SP1 was released before giving it a go. In 2008, unacceptable.

Re: Vista linux file sharing!

Odd. I've never had a problem copying to a USB drive.

Is it possible that the USB port on your Vista box is for some reason operating in USB1.1 mode?

Re: Vista linux file sharing!

I don't think so, the safely remove hardware says USB 2.0 device.
