Wireless connection 'local only' but no internet. Vista 64 strikes again!

Ok so this is my first post and yes I've already done a search. I know lots of people have had problems on Vista with having 'Local Only' access on their PC, and I'm one of them. After doing a search and reading some threads, I dont think anyone has had exactly the same problem as me, so I thought I'd seek out some advice.

So I have Vista Home Premium 64bit running. It's a new PC, fresh install etc. After trying unsuccessfully with a number of USB wireless adapters (once I installed drivers, the adapter would never be recognised), I finally found an internal PCI wireless adapter that is recognised by Vista 64 and connects to the internet. I'm using the ASUS WL-138G V2 card.

The internet has had dodgy performance at best up until now, but something was better than nothing. Last week, however, I turned my PC on only to see that my wireless network is not connecting. I tried connecting manually, but nothing.

I have to leave the computer on for half an hour before it even aknowledges my home network exists. Then my PC automatically connects to the router (local only), but doesn't connect to the internet itself. Occasionally (VERY RARELY) I am able to access the internet, but more often than not I am 'local only'.

All my hardware is up to date, all drivers are the most current, and yet I'm still stuffed.

Unless you guys can help, I'm going to have to pay for an electrician to put a phone outlet in my room so that I can have the router on MY pc, and the rest of the house will be wireless instead. Of course, that then raises the issue of finding a Vista 64 compatible ADSL2 wireless router.

*Sigh* After spending so much on a new pc and going to the trouble of building it all myself, I'm rather annoyed I'm having to use my old box which I've set up in the kitchen in order to do my work on the net. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
