Local Only Internet Access

Hello guys,

Recently I have not been able to connect to the internet. I've had the computer for a little over a year and I've been able to use the internet ever since i got it untill about 2 weeks ago. It says my access is Local only and then i look at the network and sharing center, there is a red x between my network and the internet. In my apartment we have to plug the computer into the wall with a cable. Everyone else's computers in my apartment can connect, except for me. I even tried connecting into their ports and still, nothing. I've tried installing every update i could think of by downloading onto a jumpdrive from another computer then onto mine. What else can I try? has anyone else had this problem and fixed it? Can anyone point me in the right direction? not having the internet SUCKS.

thans for any help,
Ty

Can you remember what changes you made to your computer 2 weeks ago when the problem first happened ?

Have you tried to use a new cable to check that out ?

Hi TiPod, and welcome to the Vista Forums

As a first check double click on the Red X to let windows diagnose the fault

if this fails ...

One thing you could try is to do into the Device Manager and un-install your network driver, reboot and let windows re-install the driver, this is probably the quickest method to reset the device to defaults.

when you are at the default state check the settings for TCP/ip interface on the room-mates (working) system and set yours to the same (obviously if this is set to a fixed IP address then you need to set this to the address allocated to you)

I would normally advise a system restoe for this type of error but if more than a few days have passed then this cause even more problems

Have you tried plugging into a different wall jack (not just new cable) or plugging into the router/switch directly?

My Computer

thanks for the welcome.

yea i have tried plugging into my roomates ports and nothing has happened. I also tried clicking on the red X and having windows diagnose the problem... nothing useful from that either. It just tells me to reset my modem... which i cannot do because i do not have access to it. I will definitly try to uninstall my driver and have windows reinstall it. I'll let you know how it goes.

thanks again
ty

You might well try rolling back the driver first to see if that fixes your issue - if you remove it from the system, then odds are that if the driver itself was causing the problem, Vista may attempt to reinstall the same driver.

Alternatively, when you go to remove the device you can tell Vista to force remove the driver as well - just be sure to have one handy.

Well, I went into my Device Manager and uninstalled both of my Network Drivers. Almost immediately after, they reinstalled and I'm back online!

Thanks a ton for your help! I really appreciate it, it sucks not being able to have internet access from your main computer you use everyday.

Thanks again!
Ty
