Vista - How to Share files between xp and vista

Sorry, but I can't find my unique situation. I just bought a gatway laptop with vista and also have another laptop with xp. I have a network set up. Both laptops can get on that network wirelessly and can get on the internet with both.

Now the PROBLEM, my xp laptop (wireless) sees the vista laptop (wireless) but the vista laptop doesn't see the xp laptop.

I have made the vistat laptop private and turned on all sharing. I also tried to double click the vista laptop icon(on the xp laptop) but got the error message (not authorized...).

What steps do I need to take to get the two computers sharing?

Are you allowing the computers through the firewalls, which do you use on the machines ?

i have the same prob.
on my notebook i have vista and on my desktop computer i have XP and sometimes i can see files on XP and sometime i can't.
btw my firewall is turn off,file sharing is on,password protected sharing is off and media sharing is on

Make sure that both computers are in the same 'workgroup.' (Found in computer properties). I had a similar problem and that helped.

The two laptops are in the same workgroup, all vista file sharing is on, the connection is set to private but when I look at the network map (on vista laptiop) the only thing I see is the internet icon(the world) then the router then my vista laptop. How do I get my vista laptop to see the other laptop running xp (wirelessly)?

to improve discovery between vista and XP macines you may want to download and install the Link Layer Topology discovery service on the XP machines.

also typing \\xpcomputername\ into the vista start menu search bar should display the available shares on the XP machine "xpcomputername" even when they are not displayed in the network and sharing centre or the network tab

Try to search for Network discovery in Vista's Help and Support and then look at "What is network discovery". There could perhaps be some clues there.
