Extremely SLOW file Copy Vista 64 to XP SP3

I'm a new Vista user and I've been struggling with extremely slow file copies between my Vista 64 Home Premium SP1 system and my XP SP3 system. I've searched and searched and tried a number of suggestions in posts that I have found. None have worked.

I'm running a Wireless G (54mbps) network. My Internet access from both system is very fast (FiOS 20mbps download), so no issues there.

When I say extremely slow I'm talking less than 200 KBps. I get the same slow response using Explorer and Robocopy. I have disabled autotuning and RSS with these commands.

netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

I'm at a loss. I don't know what to do to solve this problem. If anyone out there can help I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

try using a wire, wireless will never be as fast as wired connections, even using wired connections will be slow, about 3Gbps but its a lot faster than 200Kbps

I know wired is faster, but due to my situation it's not an option. Download speed from the Internet is WAY faster than computer to computer on my Wireless LAN. I've been able to achieve download speeds of MB per second from the Internet and I have never been able to get more than a few hundred KB per second computer to computer. I don't think it's the wireless network that is getting in the way. Both scenarios use the wireless network to transmit data. I think there is something else going on here I just don't know what it is. Why is the Internet speed so fast while computer to computer is SO SLOW....????? Is there a network configuration parameter that is causing a conflict between a XP and Vista system?

no, its standard, mine gets really slow transfer between my xp laptop and my vista desktop, i usually transfer 5gb at a time, its painstakingly slow at max 500kb a sec, so i plug my ethernet in and i get 3.9GB a sec

Not sure if you ever resolved this, but I also encountered this same issue on my new Vista PC, Intel i975 Processor, Marvel NICs, and Linksys 54G router. BOTTOM LINE: Verify ALL of your networked Computer's NIC Cards are set to the same speed. In my case i set everything to Auto-negotiate.

I had the same behavior with dismal slow transfer rates in the kbps as opposed to Mbps (about 4 - 30 mins to get 314MB). Performance was horrible when using the Vista PC to transfer files to and from an XP system. When i was on the XP system transfering files to and from the Vista 64 system, i had blazing speed (20 seconds for 314MB). After endless searching and attempts with all the things you had tried, I finally tested my transfer file copy against my 2nd XP system. Oddly, no problem with the transfer / copy. The only setting that was different: XP System 1 was set to 100MB full duplex, and XP System 2 was set to Auto-Negotiate. Vista was also set to Auto-Negotiate, but I didn't go very far with manipulating the Vista's system setting; I adjusted only the XP system's NIC setting to Auto-negotiate... Voila!

Hope your issue was solved 5 months ago. If this doesn't help you, maybe this helps some other new Vista person avoid hours of blog searching.

Good luck!

Vista x64 and Windows XP

Re: Extremely SLOW file Copy Vista 64 to XP SP3

This is the network setting I was referring to in my earlier post (see .jpg attachment). I had to configure this on BOTH of my computers. My Windows XP system was set to Full 100 Duplex and my Windows Vista 64 system was set to Auto negotiote. I was getting normally 7Kbps, 30Kbps popping once or twice to 100kbps, and rarely up to 300Kbps file copy transfer rates on my Vista System (to my XP box). When i adjusted this config setting to Auto negotiate on my Windows XP system, i was getting MBps download speeds. Make sure all your computers on the network are set to the same setting. Thats about all i can recommend. No other solution presented in other forums worked for me.

This dialogue box can be reached (on the XP system) by right clicking on "My Network Places" then properties. Then right click on the appropriate (active) network icon, and choose properities again. Then click on the "Configure" button next to the name of the adapter. Choose the Adanced Tab, then look for the field that looks similar to the one below.

Good luck!
