Setting Up Static IP for Laptop on LAN?

Hello,

I want to set up a static ip for one computer on my LAN (as I do for my printer). This is not for the Internet, but for my LAN only. The computer is a lap top on a wireless LinkSys network (I'm using a LinkSys router).

I want to do this so that I can set up a server for the LAN without having to worry about a continually changing ip address.

I'm using Windows Vista Home. Does anyone know how to do this?

When I follow the instructions here: (How assign a static IP address on Windows Vista), I can fix my ip address, but my Internet connection is lost! (although I don't supply a DNS. I keep that as dynamic).

Thanks for any feedback!

...John

Re: Setting Up Static IP for Laptop on LAN?

Hi

I do this with both adaptors on my desktop so I can assure you it does work

You have to assign an address from the same subnet and ensure that any DHCP sever in your router does not include this address in the address pool. Apart from this there are no other steps to take so I am surprised that yours is not working

As for the dns server I set this to the router address but it may be left to DHCP

Thanks for the help, barman. It works now. Somehow I thought I'd set the dns to automatic, but it wasn't. Anyway, I put in the gateway value for the dns and it now works!
