Hey guys. I am trying to set up a virgin wireless broadband package for a friend. He has a netgear wireless router and a virgin modem. I cant get the Internet light to come on...

This is what i done (several times)
  • Reset wireless router to factory default and powered off.
  • Powered off modem.
  • Connected the modem and the wireless router together.
  • Re-connected wireless router and modem to power supply.
I dont see what im missing but its obviously something...anyone help?

Thanks

Well you didn't tell us where the Internet light wont come on, the router, the modem or the computer, which is what by the way desktop or laptop ?

Also the experts would need to know what OS the machine is running and how old is the router and modem, it's possible they are faulty and need to be replaced.

Erm...there is no OS. Its a virgin media modem connected to a wireless router. Its used by both XP and Vista and there is no wired connection to any machine. Its all wireless.

The modem works fine on its own allowing a connection to the internet via an ethernet cable directly to a machine however when i put the ethernet cable from the modem into the internet port on the wireless router the internet light on the router will not come on. The power light and the wireless light come on. I can connect to the router but its local access only (no internet).

The hardware works fine was far as i can see because i set it up before and my friend decided to try to change something and messed it up so i had to reset to factory default and now i cant get internet access back.

Hey Fmjc001 The best way to do this is to input your connection details into the modem so that it is always on.

Then you can connect your wireless router. Here you need your Log-on and Password and you need to select a WPA2 key

Then on the PC you only have to set up the connection to the wireless router

Did you just get both the wireless router and the modem?

If yes then you need both

If no, then if the Wireless router has a built in modem you no longer need the original modem

There is a router and a seperate modem.
Ok The modem should have the Virgin connection details these are most probably already onboard, so that when the modem is connected to the wall it should show internet, if not you have to give in the Virgin connection details.
The modem is always on (always connected to the internet)

Next comes the wireless router this connects to the modem by cable, when connected it should also show internet.
You probably need to set up the User Log-on and Password as the already installed details are unsafe eg. Userlog-on = admin Password = password.
It is also best to set up a new WPA2 key for wireless safety

Now Comes the PC check your wireless connections you should se your new Router select this and try to connect, when asked give in the WPA2 Key that you have already given into the Router

All this is done over your browser I believe Netgear uses http://192.168.1 when you connect it will ask for the preinstalled user Log-on and Password these should be in your manual probably very similar to what I have written above, this is how you can setup the wireless router.

All these things that I have written should be in the manual

It may also be possible that the virgin details go in the Wireless router instead of the modem no matter but you only put them in one of the boxes as I have written it would normally be the modem.

Have you tried a different cable between the modem and router, perhaps the one you are using is faulty.?

Everything is right except for the wireless router

Your router is set up so that you can put in connection details allowing it to connect to the net, you have to go into the menu and change this so that you have just a direct throughput of the DSL signal, for example as a Modem

To save confusion your Modem as it stands is configured as a Router  because you are using it to dialup

These are pictures from my Router, unfortunately I do not have a Netgear,
1/ Configured as a Router, I dont have a seperate modem (This is setup to dialup)
2/ Configured as a Modem This is the setting you need

Not if you wait for the modem to connect, to see if the router connects as well.

The modem is already configured as a router (it can dial in) this is right. confirmation is you can see the internet light.

The Router must be configured as a modem (it cant dial in)

Send me the model no. of the router, I will try to download a manual so that I can help you better

One other thing to check is that you are connecting to the correct port on the router,

On most standard wireless routers for cable use you will have five ports, four for use with devices, (pc's, printers, etc) and one for use with the cable modem, this is often a cross wired port so these have to be correct.
