A Lot of Vista users have trouble connecting to the internet over wireless

The result being a state known as local only where the PC has a connection to the Wlan but no internet

One of many cures to be found on the Internet, which seems to work, is to disable IPv6

How to disable IPv6

How do I disable IPv6 in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008?

TBH I dont care what IPv6 does or does not as I am not using it. What is important is that my wireless connection works :)

If you have MAC security enabled on your router, make sure all computers are in it. Try doing a trace route and ping to 4.2.2.1. IPv6 usually causes slow downs. Also, Nvidia, Symantec, and MacAfee firewall and network security can block you. If you have it, disable or remove it and test. Verify your DNS servers are working. NSLookup to www.msnbc.com will check it. It will return the IPs.

Thanks for the tips, but I have already tried them. This is a Vista problem, when it works it works 100% it is just that every so often one of the Vista computers will try to connect and come up local only. It never happens to my XP machine. I never had this problem with Se7en installed. Since I have turned off IPv6 the problem seems to be gone :D

Will let you know once i find a similar case myself

I might be wrong , do correct me if i am. What i have understood that since IPV6 is still running in chain with IPV4 ( the old protocol) most routers that use NAT are not able to read IPV6 properly. These routers are not Vista Compatible and hence the slowdown in network performance. The best thing would be to buy routers that carry "VISTA COMPATIBLE " labels on them.

Except we dont buy our Routers, They come with the service! Also with a price tag of €2-300 I am in no hurry to buy something that I dont need :D

Well mate , i was just sharing my opinion and trying to draw a clear picture to everyone in getting to the root cause for the MS crap.

I will try that when I get home and I sure hope I can kill 2 birds with 1 Stone:

1.- Get my wireless to work for more than 10 minutes and recover internet connectivity when it goes to screensaver

2.- Make my wired connection come back to work when I wake it from sleep.

I went to the link to disable this, and I understand it up to the point where it says to add the registry entry. I've never done this before, and it doesn't tell you how to do that, can anyone give me the baby explanation on how to complete that without screwing something up? The laptop is new, and I'd love to fix this network problem, but I don't want to screw something up from my lack of experience.

thanks!
Joe

Hi Joe, Welcome to the forum,

The link gives you two options for disabling the IPv6 Protocol. My experience is that you only need the first one.
Click on the Start orb, type Network in the Start Search, Click Network Sharing Center, Click Manage Network Connections, Right Click on your Wireless symbol, Click Properties, accept the UAC and remove the tick from Internet Protocol Version
6(TCPIPv6) Click on ok Close all remaining windows and restart Vista

I hope this helps

Thanks for the help,
I was reading it as a "two step process", instead of two different "options". I'm praying this will work, it's a last resort before I wipe out vista and re-load XP.

My Computer

Well, it didn't work. It did last loner, but eventually went back to local only. What happens is the browser will stop loading, just the hourglass icon, and the network icon will still show 'local and internet'. Then after a minute or so, it will switch to 'local only. The ONLY way to get it back is to restart the system.

It's like 'something', I don't know what, stops talking to my router, or tries to reset itself and needs a reboot to reconnect, and if I try to disconnect from the connection and connect again, most of the time it will say "no networks available", and just NOT SEE the connection. And on the rare occasion I CAN connect again, it still won't work and immediately switches to 'local only'.

So no one knows the cause of this? I'm sure we can't count on microsoft, by the time they even admit it's a problem, there'll be another OS out there they are trying to push.

My Computer

I am having the EXACT same issue. Havent been able to check any of this fixes, I hope some work.

Maybe its just me but this didnt seem to become an issue until I downloaded updates from Microsoft, and I am not even sure which ones. I really dont want to have to install all the updates one by one and try to discover which, if any, are causing an issue.

Sorry its taken a long time to reply, try connecting to the router using the MAC address

Hi Lacer, Welcome to the Forum.

I doubt that it is related to the updates, probably just a coincidence
