Solved Network sharing problem

Hello fellow members!

I have a issue that I cannot seem to figure out with my network sharing. I have a wireless network with 2 laptops running Vista home premium and 1 xp-pro laptop all behind a linksys router. At this point I have all computer seeing and sharing (only from public folders) fine.

Problem: I want to be able to share one of the partitons that I created on one of the Vista laptops(home premuim) as a share for backup, but other Vista laptop won't let me have access to it. It does however let me have access to the public sharing folder though. How can I access this Drive/partition?

What I have /have tried so far:

Network discovery is on
file sharing is on
printer sharing is on
password protection is on
all computers have same corresponding usernames and passwords
properties of the particular partition in question is configured to share.
All computers have the same workgroup name.

What else am I missing here?

Thoughts: What I am trying to do, in a nutshell, is to be able to use that one partition for backup images for all 3 computers(has a very large drive on that specific laptop) So I even though about maybe mapping that it into the public sharing folder, a workaround, if you will, but I'm not sure if it would give me the available premissions to be able to do what I need it for.

Any advice, ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi makinit70462,

In addition to the sharing permissions Vista also has Security permissions which need to be set to enable the sharing. The sharing permissions work at a top level but the security permissions are part of the NTFS system and are in addition to sharing,

You will need to give ether the "everyone" group or at least the users that are going to be performing the backup "full Control" security permissions on the backup Drive.

If you right click on the drive and use the security tab to apply these permissions, (and let them cascade to any sub folders), this should remove the error you are recieving

Barman,

Thanks for your reply! Security tab is configured to allow full control to me as adminstraor and user as well for that drive/partition as well as the sharing tab being configured the same, but still same error with no joy. I can't figure out what else I can do.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

\\computerIP\c$ is the administrative share. Can you see it. Did you set up new shares for each drive and give full control to your user.

Hi makinit70462,

a couple of more things to check :)

I am assuming that you are using the windows firewall, if you are not then you have to have ports 135-138 and 445 open to allow sharing through a 3rd party firewall.

If you are using a 3rd party the easiest way of checking is to disable the firewall temporarily.

Another thing to check is that the option, if available, on the router to enter the workgroup name is filled in correctly.

this is strange as as far as I can see you have everything correctly set-up

Doh! just seen Michael's post and that would cause exactly the error you're getting try re-sharing the drive as something like "BackupDrive" and hopefully that should fix things

BINGO! Ok the problem was that I did not have the everyone group shared. When I added a new share "everyone" as a listed group that did it.

thanks barman
I have gave you credit for this one.
