Keep losing static IP

I set up a static IP address on one of my PCs (Acer laptop), but it won't save the settings. I have a wireless network, Linksys router, DSL and I'm running Vista Home on the Acer laptop with Broadcom 802.11g. I don't have to restart in order for it to drop the static IP address...it just seems to drop 'whenever.' It will work for a few hours, then disappear. It's happened 3 times today and I have not restarted, nor has my laptop gone into suspend or hibernation modes.

The problem started when I got a new Linksys router. I set it up with the correct settings for DSL, and I contacted Linksys support but we couldn't find a solution.

I first wrote that (above) about 6 months ago. After a couple of months, it got better, dropping only about once a week. Sometimes, it even saved my settings after a restart, and whenever it did drop, there was usually an event like the router crashing (which it does 3-5 times a week but Linksys can't help with that, either). So, I quit checking to see if someone answered me. But one week ago, we switched to Charter and now it drops every few hours for no apparent reason, just like it did 6 months ago.
