problem connecting vista to a NAS server

dear all,

i am having problems in resolving a standing issue: our building is split into two parts each with its own router. the routers given generic IP as follows

192.168.9.255 and 192.168.11.255

we have a NAS server running windows 2003 server hooked on to the router 192.168.11.255 - its IP is 192.168.11.21 ... all the systems hooked to the same router are able to 'see' the NAS server and transact with it. (vista, linux, os x - all of them)

however, on the other side, the windows vista systems connected to 192.168.9.255 do not see the NAS server. Linux systems on this subnet can again see as well as connect to it, so can os x systems. eventhough vista cannot see the server, ping works with the server fine from these vista systems too.

i am not sure what the problem is - but is sure driving me crazy.

any help is appreciated. and yes - internet works fine on all the systems including the vista / server.

thanks.
K

Hi octotus,

Try installing a Virtual Server within Vista running Windows XP - Please can you let me know if it sees it then?

Has this always been the case as well? Or has it just "suddenly" happened?

P.S - You don't have Norton Firewall running do you?

Hi Glennage,

1. I will try the first one - does it need any special licenses? (XP?) or does vista do it by itself?

2. it has always been this way. haven't been able to get it set up properly since we bought the server (about a month ago).

3. we do not run Norton - but we do run McAfee ... i will try disabling that and let you know.

EDIT:

1. I found that vista machines that are configured to access the NAS server (on the subnet 192.168.11..) do not work once they are migrated to the other sub net (192.168.9...) ...

2. disabling fire wall did not change anything.

Thanks.

Thanks for the pointers. will try them.

regards,
k

Hi There, I will give you the link, 2007 Virtual PC is free. Download details: Virtual PC 2007

Okay, thanks, that rules a few things out.

Yes, definatly turn it off, especially the firewall, Mcafee & Norton can have issues with letting you see the NAS Server.

Thanks for the pointers. will try them.

You could also instead of disabling Mcafee, open the ports for NAS, as it uses TCP. The ports which is uses are 1671 1672. The risk is low on keeping these ports open.

Hope this helps :)

Sorry for double post, forgot to mention this.

  1. Click on the Start Button and key in secpol.msc in the search box and hit Enter.
  2. When the Local Security Policy editor has loaded, expand Local Policies and select Security Options.
  3. Scroll through the list and locate "Network Security": LAN Manager authentication level." Right click on this setting and select Properties.
  4. Change the setting to "Send LM & NTML - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated"
  5. Hit OK let me know if this worked.

i tried the security policy edit already - no use.

Also, opening the ports did not do anything. is it possible that the problem is elsewhere? other than in vista systems i.e?

thanks for your prompt replies.

Hey, no problem.

As soon as you have done the Virtual Server, let me know. Need to see if XP will locate it.

Seems a strange one, but we will get to the bottom of it, I promise!
