Network printer intermittent

I have an HP Pavilion 6560z and an HP 6940 deskjet and a netgear wgr614 router. Both the PC and the printer are connected to the router via cable. From time to time, I can't print to the printer. Sometimes I can print just fine. If I turn on the printer and wait for around 5 minutes, it works 90% of the time. If I wait less than that, it fails 90% of the time. There have been times when I have had to delete the printer and re-install it just to be able to print. Sometimes I have to reboot the PC to be able to print. Many times when it fails, I have a document or a web page up that is dificult to replicate. Having to reboot the PC is a real hassle in that case.
When it fails, I have tried to cancel the print job in the que, but it is not easy to do. I have to select and cancel up to 5 times before it goes away. If I don't cancel it, it is still there after I reboot and does not print then either.
I have always been able to ping the IP address of the printer no matter how long is has been on, so it is connected to the network. Also, when I ask the router to show connected devices, it always shows the printer (if it is powered on). I have tried the original driver I got on disk when I bought the printer. I have let VISTA select the driver automaticaly. I have used a more recent driver DL'ed from the HP site. None of these change the symptoms.
I also have a Compaq laptop connected to the same router via wireless. It never fails to print. It is running XP. Help!
