1. Do you have LLTD for XP?
--On XP go to you Network Connections.
--Right click your connection going to your Vista computer
--Go to
Properties
--Check the list of items and see if you have
Link Layer Topology Responder
--If you don't continue on, if you do then this solution won't be for you.
2. Do you already have SP3?
--Go to
My Computer
--Right click -->
Properties
--One of the tabs will will tell you what service pack you have
3a. Only if you have SP2 without LLTD
--Go
here (LLTD for XPSP2)
--Install
3b. If you already have SP3 without LLTD
--Go
here (LLTD hotfix for XPSP3)
--Request the hotfix
--Install
4. Restart your XP
5. When XP restarts
--Probably a good idea to recreate your sharing network
--Go to
View Network Connections
--
Create a small or home office Network on the left side under
Tasks
--Turn on
File and Printer sharing
--Check your XP's name
--Create your workgroup name
--Just finish wizard without creating setup instructions
--Restart
**Comps should be tethered now
6. Setup Vista to communicate with your XP
--Go to
Network Connections Center
--Go down to
Network Discovery
--Open and click
Change
--Click last option
--Change WORKGROUP to your network name from your XP
--Acknowledge and click
Okay
--Turn
Network Discovery from off to on
--Turn on File Sharing
--Turn on Printer Sharing even if you don't have one.
--Restart
Your computers should see each other now. Give them a minute to recognize. I was able to share files with a fellow XP not too long ago. From the XP drag and drop files to the PUBLIC folder on the VISTA system. From the VISTA drag and drop files to the SHARED folder of the current user on XP.
I hope it's LLTD that your missing. Anything else I wouldn't know why.
Might want to
Manage Network Connections on both comps and see if all your ICP properties are set to AUTOMATIC. Just remember the default numbers before you try it.
