firewall blocking msn messenger?

My problem is that sometimes my system just freezes up, or all these blank windows pop up and I have to restart. Figuring I had some sort of spyware or malware, I downloaded a-square Free to get rid of it, but the only dangers it found were low risks emenating from cookies and such, nothing big, and I took care of that. I also realized my windows firewall was turned off, and turned it on.

Now I can't sign on to msn messenger. When I try it gives me this message, "We can't sign you in to Windows Live Messenger. There might be a problem with your internet connection. Make sure your computer is connected to the internet." Which it obviously is or otherwise I wouldn't be able to post this. Now, I've tried adding msn to the firewall exceptions, even tried turning the firewall off again and trying to log on, but the same message keeps poping up. I even tried to re-install MSN but it doesn't work.

Can anybody help?
