Everytime I turn on my Vista Ultimate x64 pc, it takes the internet down for all

Along with the Vista x64 pc we also have three other pc's at home (two are Vista 32 bit, the other is XP), one xbox360, two Wii's, and one ps3. They all connect to the internet with a wireless connection. The Vista x64 pc I have tried both a wireless connection as well as a hard wired ethernet connection.

I have two Cisco/linksys wireless routers that I have tried and the problem is the same regardless of which one I try to use. I have a WRT54GL and a WRT160NL. I have tried various firmware versions for both.

The problem involves the Vista 64-bit pc. It is the only Vista 64-bit device we have in the house. The internet runs fine as long as that pc is turned off. As soon as I turn it on, none of the devices I listed have internet access any more. On the Vista 64-bit pc I have tried both hard wired as well as wireless NIC's. Doesn't matter. I have tried putting in a static IP address as well as DHCP, neither makes a difference. Also, I installed Vista Business 32-bit on another hard drive for this pc and as soon as I did that my pc no longer took down the internet. It is obviously a problem with Vista 64-bit.

I have spent hours googling this. Apparently it is a common problem with 64-bit OS's and a lot of people are having this problem. So far I have formatted and reinstalled Vista on the pc in question to rule that out. I have disabled IPv6, turned down the speed on the NIC to 10mb Full Duplex, disabled the Firewall, disabled wireless security on the router, install all updates to the pc as well as confirmed the router is on the latest firmware. Basically I have tried everything that I have come across as a possible solution and still no luck.

Unless someone has an idea, I will either switch to Vista 32bit or buy a new Netgear router. Apparently this is a known issue with Linksys/Cisco routers, and my previous Netgear router I never had any problems with until it died which is why I mentioned buying another one.

I would say that it that it is a program running in the background as i once had a trojan that was not strong enough to kill my computer however just by running in the background and sending out its messages it would overload the routers/modem.

What I would do it turn on the Pc in question.

Start task manager

Click Netowkring tab and see if the network usage is high.

if it is then click the Performance tab and then select resource monitor.

select network and see what process's are using the network if not then it very well could be a settings issue and I would not know which.

I have this issue too! We've got four computers in our house, two XP and two Vista x64. One of the Vista machines is a desktop and connects via Ethernet, and I've never had any trouble with that one. However, as soon as I try to connect to the internet on my Vista laptop, all the XP computers' connections get interrupted and it takes about 3-5 minutes before they're able to get on again.

I couldn't actually find any information about this on google - did you find any thing? Does anyone have a clue to why this happens?

I have a Linksys WRT54G router too - again, you did say that Linksys routers had this problem but I have never heard of it and I couldn't find any information about this topic.

I run on 2 wrt54g routers and run 1 vista x64 2 windows 7 and 1 windows xp.

I found that one of my computers had a hidden program taking up the internet and causing me to have no internet. the computer in question had internet because of windows taking away from program to allow other programs access but the router is not that smart and therefore all the bandwidth can go to 1 computer.

just use task manager to check the computer in questions network usage.

The thing is, I never had this problem until I bought the two Linksys routers. When my Netgear router was working everything was fine for the 18 months that I had it until it died. I don't know if I mentioned, but on Friday night I formatted the hard drive on the Vista 64-bit pc and reloaded Vista fresh again on it. The problem remains. I know I could go and buy a cheap Netgear router for $45 and that would fix the problem, but I think my wife would shoot me after I just spent $130 on the two Linksys routers LOL. I know I could also switch to Vista 32-bit but then my pc would only be able to use 3gb out of my 4gb of RAM that I have installed and that seems like a waste to me, especially since I am a gamer and use all 4gb of the RAM.

When I turn on the Vista 64-bit it takes down the internet for all pc's, including the Vista 64-bit. The weird thing is, and I have duplicated this on both of the Linksys routers, once the internet goes down if I unplug the router for 24 hours, then when I turn it back on again it will work fine for 1-3 days even with the Vista 64-bit pc turned on. However, it is only a matter of time because the problem always comes back.

it could be a firmware issue with the routers then. i am not sure of this forums rules of customer firm ware but

you could go to linksys website and check if there is a newer firmware. or

install a custom firmware (i like dd-wrt for linksys) which will void the warrenty but might stop the problem. if custom firmware Read CAREFULLY because if your router is not supported then you got a $30 brick.

I installed DD-WRT on the WRT54GL router and that seems to have solved my problem. I wish I would have switched over to DD-WRT a long time ago and saved myself a lot of frustration.
