can't connect to internet anywhere!

Hello all, i'm asking for some help desperately. My laptop (gateway) can connect to any network (public, private, wired or wireless) with no problem but no matter what it cannot connect to the internet. I've tried as much as possible but nothing resolves this error and my isp says because my other computers work fine they can't help me. I've recycled the router and the modem, tried to ping the router (unsuccessful), tried manually setting up my connection (ip address, dns, gateway), bought a new router (belkin enhanced wireless), bought a express card ethernet port, reset winsock, but nothing works! I honestly don't know what to do since this laptop didn't include a vista disc so i don't think i can wipe the hard drive and reinstall windows without paying for something i already have. If you need any further info just let me know i'll be checking my internet every hour as i'm at the end of my rope!

On the network connections page it shows an uninterrupted line to the network which it always says is unidentified (even networks with names) but there's always a red x preventing me from getting to the internet and when i do the auto repair and diagnose it tells me to call the isp or get help from a network administrator. This problem occured shortly after my norton 360 subscription ran out and i uninstalled it to install avira in it's place.

I'm just have average network experience but the above does not compute in my mind. If you can connect to other computers on your network through the router, it would seem that you should be able to ping that router successfully. What do you think?

it connects to the network but cannot connect to any other computers on the network or the router. It just connects to a network it calls unidentified network no matter what the actual network's name is.

.....isn't it time to follow the advice and give your Internet Service Provider a call? An hour with one of their Techs., will often save you hours and get you back on net.

Welcome to Vista Forums, but it would also help if you completed your system specs. There's a link to advice at the bottom of my page. Best of luck.

rachidfunaki,

1. Can you ping the ethernet controller in your PC?
Ping address is 127.0.0.1.

2. What router address are you pinging?
192.168.2.1 = Belkin & SMC
192.168.0.1 = D-Link & Netgear
192.168.1.1 = Linksys

3. Can you do an ipconfig?
Go to cmd prompt and type ipconfig. Also try ipconfig /all.

sorry it took so long but i can only get to the internet when my gf has her laptop over here. Im using the belkin router and can access it from her computer but not the one with the problems.

My ISP informed me after about 5 min that if one computer works it's not their problem and i needed to return the laptop. WOW by the way. Those commercials are very ironic to me:confused:.

I'll copy paste my ip config on here it just a sec i gotta use a flash drive to save and move it to the other laptop.

The ping of the controller didn't work either.

ARGH i'm gonna wipe the hdd and install xp on wednesday if i can't get it to work by then. Real nice of MS to abandon vista and come out with 7 asap isn't it? With internal xp mode. Hmmm. Why not internal vista?:sarc:

If you can't even ping the network controller in your PC then no sense trying to troubleshoot further. AFAIK the 127.0.0.1 is a universal controller address. Also try "ping localhost" without the quotes instead of the 127.0.0.1.

Try reinstalling your network controller driver or install an updated driver. Get the ping on the controller working before doing anything else.

Instead of wiping your hdd and installing WinXP, if your hdd is large enough, maybe consider buying a copy of "BootIt NG" and using it to 1) Partition your HDD to get a partition for a second operating system. 2) Install WinXP into the second partition and be able to boot into either partition at will.

If you have a second hdd (either internal or USB), you can also use BootIt NG to make backup copies of your partitions. To learn more about BootIt NG go to

TeraByte Unlimited :: Boot Manager :: Partition Manager :: Drive Image :: Disk Copy :: Drive Wipe :: Hard Drive Utilities

Be advised that BootIT NG is not a hand-holding software. It's easy to use but is probably best for intermediate level users. It is a shareware type software so costs less than the commercial partition managers. It is very, very solid and I've been using it for years without a single glitch. That website has video tutorials for BootIt NG which can help you decide if you want to try it.
