At work we are wanting to send and receive faxes with our PC , we have no idea where to start or what we need.

we have Vista basic so we have no fax and scan software so we need that too (recommendations)?

we are currently connected to the internet via a broadband modem

i understand we need a fax modem? to connect to the phone line? will that connect along with our current broadband router?

we are buying a printer/scanner/copier , we also want to be able to scan and fax documents using that but im assuming the software will take care of that?

I am very computer savvy so you dont need to be too gentle ;) Just point us in the right direction , ive done some googling but im very short on time today

any help would be VERY much appreciated

cheers ta :)

If you have an all-in-one scanner/copier/printer, it may have faxing capability already without having to use your PCs.

If you want to use your PCs to fax, be very, very careful that the wrong document is not sent. I was using my PC to send faxes for my small business. I reminded myself to be sure to select the correct document to fax. But I screwed up anyway. One day a client called me and said he received the contract for someone else. I had inadvertently clicked the document below instead of the intended document. Luckily the client was an honest person and did not abuse the other client's information.

Also, receiving faxes via computer is a royal pain.

I bought an all-in-one unit and did all fax send and receive using it and wondered why I had not done it from the beginning. So much easier and faster, plus zero chance of faxing the wrong document to the wrong person.

I recommend HP all in one printer/scanner/copier/fax with a multi page feeder. No messy software to use, just use the buttons on the printer to copy and fax. It will automatically grab the next page and fax it if you have more than one page. You can use your existing phone line to fax with out having a dedicated line just for faxing. To receive a fax just make sure your printer is on and set it to the amount of rings you want before the fax will pick it up. It only takes about 3-5 minutes to set up the fax side of it and it will do it by automatically. You will just have to answer some questions along the setup and that's it.

Ditto on the HP all-in-one. That's what I currently have.

Also suggest getting a black & white laser printer for optimum economy and contract quality printouts. Black toner for a laser printer is immensely more economical than using ink for ink jet printers. Printing documents from your computer(s) will be a LOT, LOT faster than ink jet printers. And the quality of print cannot be beat.

Another benefit of laser printers over inkjet printers is two sided printing to save paper. With laser printers, toner sits on top of the paper so print on the other side of the paper is harder to see. With ink jet printing, the ink is absorbed in the paper so print on the other side is easier to see and can be annoying.

And before I forget, only buy HP toner cartridges. I've tried two different 3rd party toners and both printed much lighter than original HP toner. When I went back to original HP toner it was as if I bought a new printer.

In case this catches you in time before you buy an all-in-one.

Beware of laser printers that recirculate used toner back into the new toner reservoir. I had a Brother all-in-one and I encountered print quality problems when I used their high yield toner cartridges. Doing web research, I learned that the toner cartridge I had recirculated used toner back into the new toner reservoir while printing. This is a NO-NO since it contaminates the new toner! I don't know if this problem is unique to that particular Brother toner cartridge or whether all Brother toner cartridges are made that way.

HP toner cartridges on the other hand, have a used toner compartment. Used toner while printing goes into this compartment. I can use HP toner cartridges right down to empty without the print problems I experienced with the Brother all-in-one.

Plus the imaging drum is built into HP toner cartridges while the drum was separate on the Brother laser all-in-one that I had. I don't know if this is true for all Brother laser printers or just for the particular one I had. So HP toner cartridges cost a little more but one gets a new drum with each toner cartridge change. I prefer the HP method and don't mind paying a little more per cartridge for excellent print quality "without problems".

I see that mate yes thank you :) but we want to do it all via our printer/fax , all the buisness's we deal with have our fax number we dont want to change anything , but we get alot of junk faxes i wondred if any of the software that came with the machines had the ability to view the fax on the pc first so we could either delete it or print a copy.

All the morons we talked to at the stores we went too PC World/Currys etc had no clue what they were selling and just ended up winding me up beyond beleif

reviews on the web dont help much either
