| Vista Home Premium 64 bit | Switching FIOS from desktop to laptop All, My apologies if this topic doesn't really belong here. Everyone here is so helpful and knowledgeable I thought I'd ask. I have FIOS connected to my desktop. Sometimes I bring my laptop home from work and I wanted to know if I can just plug my laptop into the jack I use for my desktop to download work and then return it back to my desktop. Is it as simple as this or do I need to contact Verizon. Thanks. Again my apologies if this doesn't really belong here Meltie |

| Vista 32 win 7 7600 32 bit | Re: Switching FIOS from desktop to laptop meltie If its a standard ethernet cable from verizons box to your computer you should be able to simply move the cable. You will have to re-boot your computer to get an IP. If its not ethernet, if its a specialized verizon cable we need to know before we can tell you for sure hope this helps and welcome to vistax64 Ken |

| Vista Home Premium 64 bit | Re: Switching FIOS from desktop to laptop Hey Ken, As far as I know, it's just a standard cable (it's a CAT 5E cable). I'll give it a try and see what happens. Thanks Meltie |

| Vista Home Premium 64 bit | Re: Switching FIOS from desktop to laptop Ken, it worked! Thanks much. Question: I have two computers in my office and I have a device that switches between them so I don't have to have two jacks. Do you know what this is? I thought it was called a "spliter"? And . . . can a non-technical person like myself just go to Best Buy to get one and then just plug it in or is there more to it than that? Thanks again Meltie |

| Vista Home Premium 64 bit | Re: Switching FIOS from desktop to laptop It's appears to be a switch. It has one input on one side and five slots on the opposite like the photo. So I can just go to the store and get one and then just plug it in? No fancy configuration or anything needed? I won't have the other computer always plugged in so I won't need to monitor necessarily as the article talks about. It's just for when I come back from a business trip or site visit and need to download from the office. Any thoughts on what I should get? Thanks Meltie |

Thanks Meltie any decent mfr like linksys, belkin, dlink. switches dont have many (if any) configuration options. I dont know what speed your computer nis's are but if your nic's are gigabit then you eant to get a gigabit switch if you transfer files between computers alot. if not a 10/100 will do fine. they are plug and play let me know if you need help ken |
