Any major mfr. I happen to like linksys motorola, dlink. I prefer linksys because its more stabile.

You only have 1 computer? the modem is all you need, if more maybe router. You wired or wifi?

Hello Msongs,

The Motorola SB5101 is a good one, and not expensive at all.

I believe the cable companies are moving to the DOCSIS 3.0 standard. So I would make sure the modem supports this. I am looking at the Motorola SB6120 to replace my Motorola SB4101.

Hi TFW,

I just switched to the SB6120 as well.

Be sure that it has the latest firmware though for it to work perfectly. Mine didn't and I'm having to RMA it back to Motorola to get a replacement with the latest firmware. The firmware cannot be upgraded by us end-users. Some ISPs may be able to push a firmware upgrade to your modem if they support this model of modem though. You'll have to check their supported modem list to see if they do.

The older SB6120-1.0.1.1-SCM02-NOSH version has known issues of randomly losing network connections, and having to restart the modem to fix it.

thanks the replies, here's what we are going to do....

signed up for cable internet today, and we will let them provide the modem. They are only charging $2/month for it and then they will be responsible for it working or not, not us. thanks for your suggestions as always.

on the other issue of gouging us for and extra $10/month because we are not getting their bundle, its just costing them because a) we decided to get 5mb instead of 10mb since they took the $10 difference out of our pockets already, and b) if we do want tv or other services we will not get it from charter since we are paying them $10/month for nothing. oh well.

thanks again :-)
