Vista - Linksys WRT54G and Wi-Fi Protected Setup

Does this router have it? I don't think it does but I'm just wanting to confirm, as there is no result I've found when searching. Luck just sucks these days...

by protected do you mean wireless encryption? the linksys wrt54g does support wireless encryption in the forms of wep, wpa, and wpa2.

linksys wrt54g routers are imho probably the best routers for a home networking setup. although, their newer versions have nice shiny looking cases that don't really promote very good heat dissipation. i would go with what you have pictured.

It's what I use for my wireless. To set up the wireless protection you have to go to the routers web based page from with in your browser. From there you click wireless and set it up to your liking.

My wireless N adapter (why the hell did I get an N, oh well this was 2 years ago when I got it LOL, and I guess it might benefit me once I get an N router...and a connection that actually benefits from N devices) says if I have "Wi-FI PROTECTED SETUP" it will be a button on the middle of the router that either looks like a lock or two arrows going after each other in a circle. Since I don't have this, I don't think I have the feature.

IS wireless protection setup that same as wireless encrytpion? Basically having a password for the wireless connection. If so, LOL. Way to confuse me linksys. This by the way between a linksys n adapter which I was trying to set up today, and my wrt54g wireless linksys router which I've had...for 3 years now. Thing is old as hell yet I'm getting "this router is so awesome" even today. I almost threw that thing away, guess I'm glad I still have it ^^.

By the way, about what I have written in parantheses, I have a question...

Say my connection speed (I have fios) is 10 mb download speed, and 2 mb upload speed...are wireless n devices of any benefit more than G in my case?? Considering G IS 54.0 mbps and my connection is 10 mbps? I guess that would mean that is how much it can handle in a second?

Edit: Someone on xbox forums told me that what one would really get from a 54.0 mbps wireless G connection is about 1 tenth of that! Or less than 10mbps. Is any of this true?? Why would it be listed as 54.0 but give you only a tenth of this actual amount? He said even this would not suffice for my TEN MB wireless connection since a tenth of the 54.0 is well under even 10 MB. Someone help.

To get to your web based page you have to type in 192.168.1.1. This is linksys default setting. Once there click wireless, there is where you set up your protection. What this does is protect your wireless connections from passers by from getting into you network and hacking into your computers. Also check out linksys web site for "How to's".

Ok, so I guess it's the same as encryption...in other words, that button is there for a shortcut or something, and I don't have this shortcut button on my router and I have to go into the router settings as a result. I knew what encryption was for +2 years, I just thought "Wi-Fi protected setup" had to do with something completely different.

Do you have anything to say about the wireless G and 54.0 bit? I thought someone would find that really surprising...I sure did.

yeah.. 54mbit/s refers to the max net bit rate through wireless, while on average you will get 22mbit/s. wireless n operates max at 600mbit/s, but apparently averages 50-100.

Is there a way to determine how much I am getting?

About how much I would get on average, how do I test this? Via a connection speed test, or is there another way, considering, this is my xbox I'm really concerned about and I can't run a speed connection on it, maybe if it could browse websites but I cannot do it for real.

well, it's all relative to the speed of your internet connection. service providers advertise connections in the same manner. for example, comcast will advertise a connection @ 4mbit max, or verizon dsl will advertise @ 3mbit max. you might not always get the maximum bandwidth, but it is capable of delivering it at whatever is deemed optimal circumstances by the provider.


so lets say that you have 3mbit dsl. your router passes information at an average of 22mbit. you won't notice a difference between 5mbit or 5000mbit, your router is only as fast as your internet connection.

now, if you were transferring files from pc to pc, you would notice a difference. if you had an old wireless b device and were sharing files with a wireless g device, your connection would only be as fast as the wireless b device (11mbit), even though the wireless g device is capable of 54mbit.
