Modem Internet Connection speed

On my older Windows ME, I was able to see the connecton speed of the modem while I was connected to the internet. Saw amount of send and received bytes, and the speed of the modem itself. All I had to do was to click the icon with the two computer screens which was active when connected to the internet. However I am at a loss about how to do that with Vista. Athough a similar two computer screen icon appears in the lower right bar of my display, when I access it, instead of a pop-up that show me the connection information, I get no information about what the modem connection speed is, or the number of bytes received and sent.
Can anyone tell me just how I can access the similar modem connection speed information with Vista?

Click on the right click on the Network icon on your desktop.

Then click on Show Status. There is the info.

I think they should have left it on the systray icon.

Thanks for your quick reply, but I don't know what the "Network icon" is on my display screen, or what it looks like. I tried each of the icons, but never found the "Show Status" that you mention. I did find the connection speed finally thru the Control Panel's Network and Sharing Center. For the internet connection, it has a "View Status" selection, and although not in the same format as I expected, it did show the information.

Ah, I know the problem.
Right click properties>Properties>Notification Area
Check "Network"
