Networking Vista and XP computers

I am attempting to network a Vista computer and a XP Home computer using Cat5 cable.

Neither of the computers are connected to the internet, and I only want them to connect to one another.

The Vista computer has the ip set to 192.168.50.1, and the XP computer is set to 192.168.50.2.

The default gateway address and subnet mask are the same for both computers, and they are part of the same workgroup.

I have installed the patch for XP to enable LLTD.

Now, the Vista computer can see the XP computer in as part of the network, and I can successfully ping 192.168.50.2 from the Vista computer, and get a response. However, the XP computer cannot ping 192.168.50.1; the ping always times out.

If I try to set the ip address of the XP computer to the same one as the Vista computer, it will not allow it, saying that the ip is already in use on the network, so the XP computer is aware of the network somehow.

Both computers have firewalls disabled.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on what the problem is, and how I can fix it.
