Changing computer name in busness network

I have some computers networked to work with eachother. I would like to change the computer names to correspond with what they do instead of random numbers and letter. However when i tried this, the old network place and computer name were still present in the network places. I am concered this will interfear with my programs functionality.
How can i change my computer's name and still maintain network software communication?
