Vista to XP shared printer issue

I have an HP laptop running Vista home Prem. I also have a desktop with XP Home with both OS going thru wireless router. The XP desktop has a Brother HL-2040 printer. I am trying to get my laptop to print at XP, and I cannot get it to work. I am "sharing" my printer, downloaded the proper driver, turned off firewalls (temp.) on Norton. I seem to get a code of 0x800f0214. Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong or not doing?

Please?

The error code says something like "destination does not have applicable inf" files. iow, it can't find an .inf file that tells it how to install the printer driver. My old Epson pinters came with an XP driver, and a network program to run on the client machine to access the XP driver over the network. You might check the printer site for such a client program. Also look for a manufacturer's forum. Your chances of getting a specific printer to work are much higher where all the questions are for similar models. You may find out some specific trick or tweak.

Thanks for the post.

I found nothing on the man. website in regards to a forum. I have however sent them an email. Maybe they can provide me with the proper information. When I downloaded the driver it never gave me an error then. I dont understand when trying to print it then gives me a code that it cant find the path. Weird.

Thanks Again

Printer drivers is a whole specialty in itself. I now have an Epson stylus C88+. They don't have any downloadable driver for it at all. The Vista driver is in the firmware and hot loads when you plug it in. Fine and dandy if you plug it into a Vista machine. But if you plug it into a Windows7 machine, local printing will work, but it won't serve the driver over the Lan. I have to plug it into the Vista machine so that I can print from both.

I would still take a look around because there may be Printer aficionados out there who congregate. Like you can find cell phone forums, photography forums etc.. you may be able to find something with the real down and dirty printer nitty gritty someplace. Also try Linux news groups esp. regarding hardware. Some of those guys are really into the low bits and many of them deal with Windows just because it's everywhere.
