False gateway with multiple routers?

Hello to all. I think this may be a general network question, but as I use Vista... :p

So... I have this network with a switch and two routers. The routers are connected to the switch. I connect a laptop directly to router B (i.e. not to the switch), because router A is meant to be used by other PCs. The network activity icon shows that it's connected to the network from router B, but when I run "ipconfig" in the command prompt, it shows the default gateway etc. from router A!! More specifically, it should show 192.168.1.254, but it shows 192.168.1.1. How can this be??

Thanks in advance.

The router gateway in virtually all routers has the last number in the IP address set to 1. Have you modified the settings in router B somehow so that the gateway is 254?

It was the default setting of the router. Incidentally I've seen alternative default settings in other routers too, e.g. 192.168.2.1. I suspect that providers do so to avoid conflicts.
