Can't connect to network

I moved into a new house and for some reason my computer won't recognize any networks.
All the obvious things have been taken care of (my computer is on etc etc, the wireless light is on etc etc I have other computers woring wirelessly on the same connection and so forth) and it just won't recognize any networks. I went into device manager to see what was going on with the WiFi. It tells me that I need to turn on my wireless, but it is on. I went in and tried to disable it and reenable it. My computer promptly froze. After I forced it to end task I went back to look at it. It tells me that my no drivers are installed for this device, but when I look at the drivers they are there. It also tells me that my invisible drivers are up to date. Little lost as to what is wrong with this piece of machinery... Any help would be grand.

I ran the system tool. Something of note is that since I have been tinkering with it I can get the internet to work in safe mode with networking. After restarting after setting it up in safe mode it works for a while and then falters. I just recently went into the tools and found the "turn off to save power button" and that may have worked. Only time will tell.

I attached the output.

Everything looks OK. The network info shows that it has connected to your router and obtained an IP address.

What appears in the notification box when you hover your mouse cursor over the Network icon on your taskbar (If the Network icon doesn't show, see Notification Area - System Icons - Vista Forums)? Does it show you as connected? Right-click on it and click on Diagnose and Repair. What happens?

A couple of things to try:

1. Make absolutely sure that the Encryption settings match between the PC and the router, including the key.

2. Set the router settings to use one of the high channels, 10 or 11 say, and your PC's to use the same when connecting.

3. Make sure that Internet Connection Sharing is turned off in your Wireless Adapter Configuration settings.

Everything may have looked ok on that readout because I had recently restarted the computer so the internet was functioning properly.
Depending on when I hover my cursor over the network it says different things. Currently it says "Currently connected to **** Access: Limited Connectivity If I go to look for other networks or try to repair that connection it will just fail. When I go to "repair it" it gives me the following list:

1) "Plug a cable into the network adapter 'Local Area Connection'"
-If I plug it in it works fine as the problem appears to be with my wireless internet and adding a wire to the situation sort of defeats the purpose.

2) View wireless network security settings for ***
I did, checked the key, everything is in perfect working order on both sides. Also, it is not just that it cannot connect to a wireless network it is that it doesnt see ANY wireless networks where there are 7 wireless connections that can be seen from the laptop I am currently typing on.

3) A problem with your network router or bradband modem might be preventing an internet connection.
I tried power cycling a long time ago, this doesn't help the situation. Also it isn't that nothing can connect to the home network as this rather basic laptop (also running Vista) is running perfectly fine while my "high performance" laptop is being used as a mousepad for couch surfing convenience.

It is worth noting that the network seems to work perfectly fine in safe mode. In normal mode the computer cannot detect any wireless connections at all (only one listed is the one that it was connected to before when I turned it on in safe mode.) After a little while the connection will slow, then go to "limited connectivity" and never work again. If you try to refresh or find another network it loses the one it was connected to previously and the network must be found in safemode again.

As for the couple of things. I am not certain how to change the channel on my router and quite honestly I'm a little hesitant to play around with things that are obviously working (every other computer in the house is working fine on this router and this computer fails to find networks in neighbor's houses / friend's houses / The local bar).

My Computer

Try this:

Go to Network Connections (Control Panel (Classic View) > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections).

You should see Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) under Local Area Connection as well as your Wireless and Bluetooth Adapters. Right-click the Realtek adapter and click on disable.

Reboot and see what happens.

When you say that you make it sound like there are three things in that window (Lan, wireless, bluetooth), but maybe that is just the way I took it. I disabled the realtek adapter and rebooted. That didn't seem to do anything for the problem. When I rebooted there was no connection established and it doesn't show any wireless networks.

Hi Ed,

would you mind looking at my info, as well...I am completely lost and none of the tech support people I have spoken to can help.

I can't browse but I have a solid connection, problem just started yesterday after I uninstalled DivX and PC tools anti-virus, thanks. My apologies for barging in on you gentlement.

Hi Wasteomana;

Sorry for the delay; been up to my ears.

Could you run the SysInfo tool again, with your computer configured in the non-connecting condition, and upload the report.

Thanks,
Ed

Just to be clear the problem is not fixed since Billygoat said something about his problem on the thread I started without being clear.

Thanks for saying something about it being a while before you got back to look at it. I know you didn't need to and it was just a nice gesture.

Anyways, I just got back from paragliding and I'm going to go collapse, but after I wake up I'll run that system tool again and put the new one up here.

My Computer

Again, to be clear, issue not resolved.

I booted up the computer and ran the system utility with it as "limited connectivity" then I took it off the thing that it actually had no connectivity to and ran it again. The file ending in 339 is the one after the network was officially not connected.

My Computer

the first one shows you connected to your router (or someone's router :)), and it's assigned you an IP address. Limited connectivity is often related to encryption problems, but you've already ruled that out.

You've also got a number of items related to the wireless adapter in your event log; unfortunately, they're not very helpful in diagnosis.

A few things to try:

Reset WinSock - Open an administrative command prompt and type netsh winsock reset.

Check the HP web site and make sure you've got the latest drivers; http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...eCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=ca&product=3938568; they've also got a piece of software called HP Wireless Assistant
that might help. Also check out their troubleshooting area. I don't know your exact model so can't provide direct links.

Set your router wireless channel to a different one. You might be getting interference. It shouldn't bother the other devices; they should detect it automatically. You should be able to access your settings through your browser, on the computer that's connected by ethernet cable, by typing 192.168.0.1 in the address bar.

Winsock command tells me that I need to be elevated to do that. I tried sitting on the couch rather than the floor and ran it again, it didn't work (I'm kidding). I imagine it is not an admin cmd prompt, but there is only one user on that computer so I don't know how to fix it.

I already have the HP wireless assistant downloaded, it is of no use. I also made sure to check all drivers as up to date in the beginning of this whole troubleshooting stuff.

I'll try the channel thing once I find an ethernet cable. I don't use them for anything and I can't seem to locate one in the house (All my computers are on wireless).

Edit: I feel like there is something big that is not getting any attention here. The computer's wireless internet works perfectly fine when in safe mode. It would seem to me that the problem is something that is different in the two modes. I would imagine if we could figure out what the two modes do differently finding the problem would be simpler than just trying to guess and check other methods. I don't really know how to go about that so maybe it is easier this way though.

Does it work consistently in Safe mode? Doesn't exhibit the same problem as in normal mode?

If so, try running MSConfig (Start > Run, type in msconfig, and press OK).

Click on Selective startup, then on the Startup tab and Disable all, then on Services tab, Hide all Microsoft Services, and Disable all. Click on OK and restart.

Try running like that for a while and see if the problem exists.

This is what we're doing - How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7.

Let me know how it goes.
