No internet connection when waking from sleep

Since installing McAfee 2010 Total Protection 35 days ago, I have had probems with limited or no connectivity. I have talked to McAfee (my 30 day free phone help is now up) who had me do a number of things (I am not computer savy), but no solution. My ISP has been out twice - they report no problems. HP Pavilion Desktop PC still in warranty, so talked with HP, who took control of computer and did a lot of things, but still cannot connect to internet after waking from sleep without letting Windows Diagnostics reset internet adapter every time.

Any ideas to correct this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Gemini46,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

Are you connected to the internet through a direct or wireless connection?

Did the McAfee technician have you re-install the driver for your network adapter?

I am connected via cable with modem from Time Warner (stx.rr.com). HP had me uninstall and re-install network adapter after checking to make sure I have the most up-dated one. Is the network adapter the driver you a referring to?

Right click on your adapter in Network Connections, click on Properties, click on Configure, click on the Power Management tab and remove all check marks.

Let us know if it works.

Thanks again, Ed, but Wireless Settings had been set at Maximum Performance already. Just a question and an uneducated one at that, but since I'm using an Ethernet Connection, does the Wireless Setting affect this?

Gemini46

My Computer

Sorry, Gemini46, my bad, I had forgotten you were connected by Ethernet, not Wireless.

No, the Wireless setting shouldn't affect it.

We're at the limit of my capabilities.

I assume everything else has already been checked, so the only other thing I can suggest is looking at the items in the Advanced tab of Configure for your adapter, and selectively toggling the various properties that refer to power.

After that, shot my bolt; sorry.

Sounds an awful lot like my problem; Right now I am at a loss also; Curious what OS are you using?
If you have vista can you look under System and maintenance; Problem Reports & Solutions; View Problem History : Tell me what you show for DHCP Client, Internet Explorer and Host Process, Windows Services and Network Diagnostics Framework.

Still believe it is a Windows update created problem. Have tried the update to DHCP and certain routers problem, but was unseccessful in the problem resolution, that is why I chose to go to awake mode. Origianlly thought because of antivirus programs but appears not to be from them.

Evan tho problem sent many times to MS there appears to be no resolution attempt or acknowledgement.

I have Vista Home Premium SP2 64-bit on a HP Pavilion Destop with an Nvidia nForce 10/100 mbps Ethernet network adapter.

As far as the info you asked for, I am not sure (being computer illiterate) how to get that to you. In the Problem Reports > View Problem History, there are 6 items listed for IE, 11 for McAfee Service Host (Stopped working), 2 for Windows Explorer AND 32 for Network Diagnostics Framework (all 'Unable to diagnose/repair network problems'). And, as in your case, "no solutions found" for any of this.

I really think that there is some incompatibilty between McAfee and Windows or the network adapter because I never had this problem for the 1st 7 months of having this PC until I installed McAfee 2010 Total Protection and when I uninstall McAfee completely using their tool, the problem is resolved (however, that was a few weeks ago, so may uninstall it again and see if my problem still clears up). Maybe that is why McAfee offered rebates on this protection package making it basically "free".

Whatever the cause, I agree with you about MS. Why should they attempt to solve this problem in Vista (and I have viewed many forums about this) - they came up with Windows 7 for us to solve all our problems. Yeah, right!

Origanally I thought that it was being caused by an antivirus program and that is why I started uninstalling and installing new ones, but in trouble shooting I removed all except the windows security center that comes with vista 64, still had the same connectivity problems. Getting ready to do a search to find out how to remove the Security Center and see what happens on the awake from sleep mode;

No not the Microsoft Security Essentials addon program!!

Disabled the Security Center program that comes with Vista; it won't let you uninstall it, so just disable it; Reactivated the sleep function after 1 hour. So far have awakened it twice and both times it has responded like the old days and just like it is supposed to.

Had been blaming 3rd party apps but after awhile you have to stop and think; it can't be all these programs causing the same problem. Microsoft tried and true for sure; yea right.

Well let you know in the morning, that's the true test. Awake after a long sleep period.

How did your solution work after the long overnight sleep? Hope all is fixed for you. My Windows Firewall and Windows Defender have been turned off as McAfee's program did this when I installed it. I am assuming you went further, so could you guide me through the process you used?

Unfortuntley it went back into the problem mode after a good nites sleep. After awaking it came on line for a few seconds, went to to yellow triangle then to Local Access only. Diagnois was no help at that point nor did resetting the router. Generally have to do a system restart to get the full connection back and then have to initially wait a ton to connect to ; like Yahoo. But each time it connects reconnects it tends to connect faster.
Unfortunately have gone back to disable sleep.

Course now Windows Defender will not turn on and goes to Not responding. Gotta love all these problems as of late.

So sorry to hear that. Thought maybe you found a fix for this irritating problem.

I talked to 2 techs this last week, one at Altex and one manager of the Geek Squad at Best Buy. They both suggested installing Windows 7, (I was sent the free upgrade DVD by HP), both felt that would "take care of the problem". But I am so not wanting to do this as it looks complicated and I'm not sure it won't come with problems of its own. Not being that computer saavy, I don't want to mess up more stuff. Oh, well . . . back to the drawing board.

Everything was fine up untill a couple of months ago and then wham. From your post it sounds like that they are indicating that MS is abandioning Vista to concentrate on Win 7. I am like you why should I upgrade because they don't want to correct the problem. What happens two years from now when they come out with Win 8, we end up going thru the samr because they don't want to continue support. Never ending vicious money cycle for them, which is what they want.

Will post if I find a fix, but right now am swammped with very little spare time.

Looking in the Win 7 forums they are experiencing the same problems that we are, so going to Win 7 is not going to fix the problem. Have to figure out if the problem is from an MS update or a third party app. As advised have disabled sleep mode and all is well. Appears that MS is shutting down the router/modem and not reawaking it properly. Doesn't appear to be a single brand that is causing the problem.
almost has to be from an update from somebody as it worked fine untill a couple of months ago, then started.

I thought I saw the same problem pop up with Win 7 as I checked around the net for some answers. So even tho 2 techs told me to upgrade to solve this problem, I was just not sure about it and now I know I'm not going to do it.

I came across the Event Viewer on my PC (did not know what it was before) and it has logged the following message (I put the red x's instead of what was there as I wasn't sure how safe it is to put that info out here for all to see) so many times, all times corresponding to when I woke my PC:

Log Name: System
Source: Microsoft-Windows-Dhcp-Client

Event ID: 1003
Task Category: None
Level: Warning
Keywords: Classic

Computer: xxxx-PC
Description:
Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address xxxxxxxxxxxx. The following error occurred:
The semaphore timeout period has expired.. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

These are all under "Administrative" events. Nothing under "Network Diagnostics". I really do not know what this means or if it has anything to do with my problem, altho it would seem to me that it does. Do you know what this means?
