Losing internet

This has been an ongoing problem for around 6 mths now and is really getting to me now.
Namely the dropping of the internet.
I can be merrily surfing the net one minute and then the next if I go to a site I get the message "looking up XXXXX".
At this time my taskbar internet icon can be showing the internet connect to be either "local" or "local and internet".
Now obviously if local I will lose it but if it's saying "local and internet" why doesn't it work? It will eventually drop back to local everytime. Even though at all times the ADSL line light on my modem/router is showing solid.
The problem is intermittent. I can have best part of a day without trouble, then it may happen lots of times in a short period.
To get it back requires reboots of the modem/router and/or reboots of the PC.
I have tried 3 different modem/routers all do the same. Now losing patience:mad:

Are you directly connected via Ethernet, or wirelessly connected to your router?

What brand and how old is your router?

Have you tried re-installing your wireless adapter's driver?

It's a D-Link DSL-G604T connected via ethernet cabling, no wireless connections.

I have today moved the router nearer to where the phone line enters the property and so far no problems, so I await results!

Been ok for 2 days now playing up again. Again tried numerous routers all the same.

I never lose the ADSL line light on the router but I just lose my outside connection.
Taskbar icon just states local access only.

If I go into the D-Link router under IP management there is a blank for "default gateway" when I have lost the net, other times I have an entry ie 212.74.111. IP address,Netmask,Hostname andDomain name are always there its just the default gateway.

A few reboots of the router cure it. I am at a loss:confused:

Can you see a process "mobsync.exe" in Task Manager? This process runs when any USB device is inserted.
I had the same problem but with different modem and a USB stick inserted. I have removed the USB and this process stopped( I have also set "Portable Device Enumerator Service" as Manual Start in Services).
I am not sure whether this will work but you could give it a shot.

EDIT: I found the culprit, it was "doubleclick", I ran Super Anti Spyware and it found this virus. Hope this help you.

Hi.

tried what you said but no different. What gets me is the inconsistancy of it. It can go aday or two no problems then play up nearly continually.
This afternoon I lost the internet and whatever I did ie reboot the Pc reboot, numerous times the D-Link router no joy. So in frustration I swapped the router for a Thomson one and yes it worked. Now what has happened in the past if I have received or made a phone call I lose the net.
So ths afternoon I made a few phone calls. Immmediately after each acll the router still says connected, the internet symbol on the taskbar still says "Access:Local and Internet" but if I clickmy internet icon I get the usual "looking for" etc until after about 30 secs it all reverts to ok. This is without me touching anything.
Am at a loss

You could contact your ISP and ask for a replacement router explaining your problem(this is what I have done and waiting for my router).
Recently my ISP has increased the speed of the Internet from 8Mb to 24Mb, I suspect this may be one of the reasons for this behaviour( old equipments unable to cope with the increase).
I couldn't think of any remedy at the moment,if I come across any solution I'll let you know. Hope you get things sorted soon.

Lol, those are advertised speeds and with ancient copper wiring I don't think anybody achieving those speeds anytime soon.
However, I found this thread in Sevenforums, though it's for a wireless connection you could try some of those settings in Power plan.

Oops may eb I should have said at the outset that this occurs on the main PC but if my laptop is connected to the router as well by ethernet cable or wirelessly the result is the same on the laptop. So by mu reckoning that says the PCs are not at fault. The fact problem occurs on more than one router suggests they are blameless. So what does this leave:

1 My ISP dubious cause
2 My ADSL line as I don't lose the ADSL signal again I'm a bit dubious
3 My internal telephone wiring :o

There is quite a bit of this trailing around the property as I installed it around 10 yrs ago. When I first got broadband I could only get an ADSL signal at the main telephone in commer and 2 sockets into the property. Connecting to any other socket I got no ADSL light. I was so peed off with this I went wireless totally for many years.
Now wireless isn't the greatest so a couple of years back I looked into this lack of ADSL signal again. I made sure that all the phones in the property had microfilters fitted etc and lo and behold I got an ADSL signal anywhere.
When the current problem arose I did think it was maybe a phone causing it, as there are 3 phones and a fax connected but the problem still happens even if no phones are connected.
My next try will be to put the router directly onto the incoming phone line and see how long it lasts, maybe difficult to ascertain as sometimes it's faultless for days on end.
One other thought I've had is to use these homeplug things to send the ethernet signal from the router to the PC so utilising as little phone line cable as possible!
Confused? Well I am
