Wireless shorted out, unhooked it, now DSL connection stops after comp sleeps

Had a problem with my wireless connection so I unplugged the power cord and plugged it back in to the wireless router...saw a visible spark and router wouldn't light back up. So, I unhooked the wireless and just ran the DSL line from the wall to the WESTELL 6100 modem to the computer like normal.

Now, when surfing the internet on my desktop, after a certain period of time, usually 20-30 minutes, when I try to open a new page, the status is "connecting" but it never opens up the page. I have to disconnect the power cord from the Westell, plug it back in and it browses the web fine. This also happens when the computer goes to sleep. I've unchecked the box regarding shutting down this device to conserve power and that didn't do the trick. I've been on the phone for hours with AT&T/Bellsouth and they are saying it's something in the computer causing it, that they are getting perfect signals from the Westell.

Any thoughts on what could be causing this and why it works fine everytime after the modem is unplugged then plugged back in.

One other caveat, if I run the modem to my laptop the internet works fine and stays working, even if my laptop goes to sleep.
