Windows Firewall and Query User--Can't connect to Internet via router

Hi All,

Well, this morning I got up and got on my laptop to find that I could not get on the internet. At my house I get online via my roommates router. When I clicked diagnose I received the following:

Policy Provider: Windows Firewall
Filter Name: Query User

And obviously Vista would tell me what the problem is but not how to fix it...so typical. It's incredibly frustrating because I didn't change any settings. One night it's working and 3 hours later somehow Vista magically changed settings on me.

I want to know what specifically do I change, how do I get there, and how do I do it. I hate that Vista will say "this is the problem and you need to change it in order to fix the problem" and it doesn't even tell you what directory to go to. Talk about bad design...

My problem is similar to this:
http://www.vistax64.com/vista-security/162718-windows-firewall-problem-filter-query.html

Except I still don't know what rules to change. I have been fighting with Vista all day trying to fix the problem, and it's incredibly hard when your only other internet to look up the problem is your blackberry.

So please, be specific, name the directories, what specifically to change, and how to change it(right click, click this and this and bam!).

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried a system restore back to yesterday?

Go to start type system restore, when it shows click on it, when it opens click next.
Go to the point you want to restore to and follow the prompts.
If that fails to fix it post back.
If it does fix it run a scan with MalwareBytes to see what changed your settings.

Malwarebytes

You only need the free version.

I'm getting the same error message, but under different circumstances.

My desktop is connected directly to my cable modem, and two days ago, my internet connection just died. Upon diagnosing the problem, I got the same error message as mentioned above: Problem with Windows Firewall, filter Query User.

Having not changed anything at all in the past two weeks or so on the computer, I can't imagine what could have caused it to suddenly have this problem. I've searched Google, these forums and others, and I've tried all the suggestions that I've found:

Cutting off the firewall and rebooting
Restoring to an earlier restore point
Using OpenDNS IP addresses (https://store.opendns.com/setup/device/windows-vista/)
Cutting off my modem and turning it back on
Screwing around with the firewall settings
Resetting the default settings on the firewall and on security
Ran a virus scan and it found nothing.

I'm at a loss for what else to try. Apparently my other devices in the house (2 laptops by wireless and a PS3 wired connection) still work just fine, which boggles my mind.

If anyone has any other suggestions that might help, I'm all ears.

Thanks,

M.

I found out to be a DNS problem eventually. Go check the Ipv4 properties of the connection and focus on the DNS server IP at the bottom section. This has probably gone wrong.

You can check the correct DNS server IP inside the admin page of the router (usually have ip like 192.168.1.1)
You will see the DNS ip listed somewhere in the properties listed (status page ?).

I updated mine DNS with the one listed on the router page, and voilla ! the connection is made.
