Disappearing Modem

I have a Toshiba Satellite (i know it sucks...its my wife's machine) a205-4577. It has been working fine for a while, she just uses it for internet and email. Today she tried to get on the internet and cant. I looked at it, and the modem is completely gone from the device manager, like its never been there. I usually connect wirelessly, but even when i plug it directly into the cable modem there is no connectivity. With the hardline I do show a local connection, just no internet. I have a few other computers, plus iphones, and all work fine on the wireless, im using it now. After doing some research, I see than every once and a while windows update will mess the driver up somehow, and the workaround is to restore from a previous spot. I have done that to no avail. The little light that goes on when the wireless is turned on isnt even working. If the modem was completely fried, then it wouldnt know that a local cable had been installed. I had this happen a few months ago and the restore worked fine. Just at my wits end, if I cant get to the internet, I cant download a new driver. its a vicious circle. anyone have any ideas?
