Hello, Yeh.. lol I don't have Vista nor Windows 2000...
I have Windows XP, But that doesnt matter now.. [Back to the subject] :)

I have been having the same problems to... For example..

Lately... My Connection is the best singal strengh, ect...

I have my Ethernet cable into my x box 360 and my wireless adapter in my pc...
Basicaly I use my sound system and monitor for my xbox 360, Cheap.. :D I know...lol

But anyways... Whiles't Playing Happily Online Xbox live.. I soon get a disconnection from xbox live... I started wondering what was going on.. So i check my pc wireless connection seeing if there was a problem with the internet...

.. I check and see My internet is connected... I go on my internet explorer... Having the internet not work.. and my msn to... I wonder and wonder wait patiently... And It starts working again?

I have a NETGEAR n300 Model

My ip is dynamic.. though used to be Static? Which i changed on settings...

Iv called TALK TALK, they ran tests and everything was fine. I called Netgear.. and they were clueless... They just hung up on me... I personally think its not the wireless but the router configuration or the router itself.

If anyone could help me. Please Reply.

Hello nickisaws0me,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

I would suggest trying to reset your modem.

  • First unplug the power cords on both your modem and router.
  • There should be a small reset button on the back near the power cord, use a pen to press it, and hold it down for a couples seconds to make sure it works.
  • Then plug back in the power for the modem and let it connect, then connect the power to router.

@Chase,

Thread starter reported this issue as solved in http://www.vistax64.com/network-sha...but-says-im-connected-please-please-help.html. I've reported this that in this thread. Seems the issue was with the router (nice targeting - you had the right problem device, Chase) and changing the MTU solved the problem. Here's the important part of what he/she said:

Reduce MTU size in (WAN setup)
to 1400

It makes internet faster and more stable from the less interference! It has worked for me for a day!

I wasn't aware we could change the MTU on our routers (I can't on mine as far as I know, but then it is a somewhat inexpensive Linksys wireless with only 4 ports). Then again, he/she indicated "in WAN setup" which suggests it was a network configuration setting and maybe not a router change but a computer change - I'll have to check mine to see if I have a setting like that and maybe fiddle around with it to gain more speed and stability (without messing things up - LOL).

In fact, to be honest, I haven't the faintest idea how to communicate with my router. And I didn't know there was a button to depress on a router to reset it - I've always just unplugged it and replugged it when it needed to be reset - is that bad for the router (like it would be for a computer) or does it not matter? I'll have to look for that as well. When I try to go to 192.168.0.1 (which I thought would be the router - it is the default gateway), I seem to get to the ISP modem's configuration page (which is connected to one port in the router) but there's nothing there about the router. I've never needed to install anything to initially setup the router (or any other router for that matter) - all I did was plug everything into it and it just started working fine (so it's not like there's a software program with controls and settings). I suppose there probably are with the expensive ones used in large company setups (like with the high-end Cisco models), but none of my clients (homeowners and small businesses using peer-to-peer workgroup networks and not domains) ever used or needed anything like that.

Even though I've setup MANY small networks over the years, I've never adjusted MTU settings or configured the router in any way (unless setting up wireless security does that - and now that I think about it, I suppose that must be the case even though I don't seem to actually ever have to select the router). I guess I need to spend some time researching this more as it seems I have a gap in my understanding of networks. Although I have several network-related certifications, none of them covered this type of information. Any hints as to a good place to look to find a tutorial or something similar on this? I checked our tutorials, and none seem to cover basic hardware information like this. I suppose I can just do some Bing searches.

Anyway, I thought I'd let you know how this ended in case you weren't following the other thread and provide information about the answer from the Thread Starter to anyone who ever does read this thread.

That is so wird.. Because Netgear told me to change my mtu settings to 1400... before it was like 1480...

It worked amazingly for 3 hours... Then.. *sighs* disconnected again..
This is really becoming a major problem...
Its not the ISP it can't be... I plugged my ISP provided MODEM into my xbox360 it worked fine for a day... Its the router config.. Deffinely

Nothing else... Somthing to do with the configuration...

Are you sure it isn't a problem with the router itself? Are there any other computers connected to it and are they all working fine and not disconnecting? How are you connected - by ethernet cable or wireless?

If ethernet, try a different port on the router to see if that makes a difference - if so, it's a bad port and you should be fine using the good port (but mark the bad one so you don't try to use it in the future) and if not, then skip ahead to connecting directly to the modem.

If wireless, try connecting by ethernet cable and see if that solves the problem - if so, then the problem is with the wireless transmission from the router or your computer's ability to receive and retain the signal (and that could be a hardware or a software problem - hard to say at this point).

If the ethernet connection also fails, plug the computer directly into the modem and bypass the router entirely and see what happens. If that works fine then it is definitely something about the router or the router configuration. If that doesn't work and you still have the problem, then I'd say that rules out the router and the problem is with your computer given that the modem works fine with the X-Box (again, hard to say if it's software or hardware at this point).

I hope this at least helps us narrow down the cause of the problem so we can focus our attention in the right direction.

Good luck!

Hi again, thanks for replying in such short notice.

I have a theory.. it could be the router itself.. But Im pretty sure its the configuration.. since I just got the latest router in PC WORLD just about a week ago.. I doubt it could be the router, though.. a possibility.
And yes, all laptops around have the same problem of disconnecting whilest saying its connected...

Yes, I have plugged in the modem into the xbox, and the pc in a day.. and they worked fine!! But my brother was complaining and so we had to switch with the router in order to share the connection...

But if you know anything about what I should change in the Router config settings... Thats what im most focusing on... Since my ethernet cable, and router are brand new.. So lets put that behind us for now.. ;)

I did some further research about the UpNp tried enabling/disabling it... But that didn't work..
Also heard about dynamic DNS servers occasionly drop connection So I was thinking of changing it Static.. But I don't know if thats a wise choice....

My ip is dynamic also the dns server.
I have tried changing MTU to 1400 which worked fine for a couple of hours...
This is very frustrating.. Trying to play xbox360 without it disconnecting every couple or mins...

But you see... Im up to the point that maybe I should buy a new one... Could be fault... But i have tried everything. If there's more suggestions about configuration... please respond.

If theres any info you want about my router, or settings Ill give.

Thank you.
