Problem connecting to internet after restarting.

So here's my problem. Almost every time I do a Microsoft update or even change
something that requires my computer to restart it doesn't recognize my network or any connection at all. I have to use system restore to get my internet back. There is nothing wrong with the nic, and when this happens I can check ipconfig and it doesn't have any information at all, like I never had a connection. But also when I check my on board NIC it has nothing wrong with it. It uses the Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller. This is also a Dell computer that is about 1 year old and it just started doing this and it uses Vista Home Premium 64bit os.

I have ran MalWare, Ad-Ware, checked the disk for errors and it still does it...sometimes.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be?

Sorry, I thought I had put that in. I'm connected with a modem to router with a wire. I have a wireless laptop and wired xbox 360 that work flawless on this network.

thats happening here is that the xbox is generating the ip address so when you connect your computer it can't find the ip address, you need to disconnect the xbox, connect the computer first for it to get the ip address then connect the xbox to it..
see how that goes..
cheers

Even if the xbox isn't on? How come it doesn't do the same thing after I do a system restore? It's not recognizing I have a nic. When I run ipconfig after it has happened it has no ip address, says the media is disconnected. but then I go take a look at the controller in devise manager and it says it's functioning properly and that I have the most up to date drivers.

I can just restart and nothing happens. Only when windows updates or I try and add a program or something and it doesn't do it everytime.

This is what it tells me when this happens.

I could post what info it has before it "breaks" if you would like.

thats what happening. checking the settings on that router it shoud be set to have a dynamic ip address, and you xbox and computer should have a static one.
I would recommend you to reset that router to its factory default by using the reset button and see if that makes any difference..

My xbox is making my computer think it doesn't have a network controller? I will reset the router now but I'm not grasping how the xbox is doing this, especially if it doesn't happen every time. Wouldn't it do it every time I would restart the computer? How come it doesn't bother the other two computers on the network? I'm not trying to be difficult, I'm just trying to understand.

So I reset the router and restarted and it was fine. Then I downloaded the newest free avg and reset router and restarted and same problem again. It seems to only happen when something has changed on the computer that requires a restart. Do you have anymore ideas, would reinstalling windows fix this? Or maybe I could use the fix windows option.

Could you please post the sections of ipconfig /all that show the local connections (both if using both wireless and cabled separately) and, if you have a separate broadband connection, that as well? Please do so while everything is connected (that you would ever want simultaneously connected) and before it is broken.

Also, please do the same for one of the computers that is working fine (a Vista machine if possible, but that's not required) and make sure we can tell which is which. I'd like to see how they differ in any way whatsoever.

If you have a way to provide a picture or printout or screenshot of the router configuration, that too would be helpful.

Thanks!

Ok I think I might have figured this out. Tell me if any of you have ever heard of this before. My free AVG was not functioning properly. It wouldn't turn on and I could even access the interface but I didn't even realize this until now as there was no notification or anything. So when I did finally notice it today I tried to uninstall it so I could put it back on there again. It kept popping up an error and wouldn't let me uninstall. So I ran setup again and it asked me if I wanted to fix previously installed version and I did. So far I have reinstalled another program that I had on here before and then restarted and it didn't "break". So has anyone ever heard of AVG doing this sort of thing.

Lorien, I can add those things if you would like but I would send you a pm with that info in it.

If it's working now and the problem is solved, I don't need any of that.

Any program, especially AV programs, can cause a variety of problems. I haven't heard of AVG specifically doing this before, but it sounds like it didn't install correctly and THAT could have caused this or other problems as well. It may have had more to do with the bad/incomplete installation than with your network connection or setup. Test it out for a few days to make sure it's working fine.

It sounds like you've solved the problem and will now be fine, but post back if the problem returns or anything else occurs.

Good luck and best wishes.
