No internet connection

I have Dell desktop with windows vista home premium 64 bit sp1 installed on it.
I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled this OS. When I set up a Ethernet connection to my cable dsl; I get a message that says something is wrong with my Ethernet software or hardware. Update manager says no update necessary current install is fine. The only way I can connect to Internet with this PC is to use my boot CD with Ubuntu 10.04 on it. that is how I was able to write this note to ask for help.

What do I do to rectify this situation?
Can a solution be be downloaded through Ubuntu and installed on vista?
Any other suggestions?

I only have a Windows OS so I can use IE 8. I need it to report my on-line work. If there was an EASY way to run IE 8 on Ubuntu I would not have to worry about fixing my vista.

Sounds like you need to install the driver for your ethernet adapter.

could you please explain how to do that?
i still don't understand why the Ethernet software, hardware, and driver connection works with Ubuntu but not with vista on the same PC

If you give me the model number for your computer I can see if I can find the driver for you.

Usually your manufacturer's website will provide you with all dirvers needed.

Hopefully, you just need to install the driver form their website.

Is it a laptop or desktop?... Inspiron, Dimension, XPS?

This should be the driver you need if the above computer s yours.

Download and transfer it to a cd if you can, then install in on Windows.

I downloaded the driver and when I tried to install it the message came up that said my driver that was already installed was working fine.
I opened trouble shooter and it came up with Error 814, and said that I needed to install or enable Ethernet adapter in network connections folder. I did not see where and how to do that. My son is coming over to visit tomorrow. He said he was going to figure it out or leave his laptop for me to use and bring it to his home to work on it.
