Losing internet - one site or all?

I have Vista and DSL. I've had times where I'll go to a site and it will seem like the site is hanging. Then the network indicator (in the system tray) will turn to a "!".

My main question is, is it possible that something is wrong with one site, and Vista is "fooled" into thinking something is wrong with the whole internet connection??

Or is Vista always going to be accurate about losing the connection?

It doesn't happen often. Every few weeks I might suddenly see the globe disappear and there is just the two computers, but then the globe will return after a minute. However today I had to reboot the DSL modem and it was okay.

    Welcome
I dont know of the OS being fooled. You are hanging because of the bad connection.
Take the speed test and then ping test and post results here.
Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
Try during clean boot. It may be a conflict
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

When it happens type event viewer in search, by search and take not of any errors, from administrative tab.

When it happens right click on the newtwork icon, lower right and then diagnose and repair.

    Hi,

It sounds as though the internet connection is dropping off with your ISP. As the issue is intermittant, I would start with them & complete a Malwarebyte check just to confirm there are no nasties about on your system.

What antivirus/ Malware protection are you using?

    If nothing try these options:-

    Malwarebytes

The problem seems to happen once every 2-4 weeks so I'm just going to wait. The thing is, this time I got the "!" but in the past I just lost the blue globe.

I have run speedtests many times and it's always the same.
I use Norton IS 2009 - it seems to be okay.

I have another question - the yellow triangle means "limited connectivity" - what does that mean, as opposed to no blue globe?

    Hi,

Limited connectivity is just that, you are connected to the network but at a low speed/ weak signal strength &/ or not the internet too.

Is the problem between my computer and the DSL modem, or between the modem and the internet?

I have only one desktop computer and just the DSL modem.

    Hi,

If you ask me, it looks like it could be with your ISP?

That is DSL to Modem or Modem to DSL they control the DSL!

Your bit its the Modem, if it's your equipment? If not it's theirs again.

One thing that is yours is the wireless card in your laptop or desktop PC.

How far away are you from the router? Range & walls etc. have a big influence on connectivity!
