Unable to connect to wireless network
Can anyone help with the following problem please?
I am unable to connect to a wireless network.
I have an Acer Aspire 5315 with an Atheros AR5007EG wireless adapter. This shows as "working correctly" in Device Manager. I have tried to re-install drivers for it endlessly. They all seem to install ok but I still have the problem.
The symtoms are....
1) If I try to setup a wireless connection I get "An unexpected error occured". There are no useful looking messages in Event Viewer.
2) If I use "Diagnose and repair" I get "The network adapter is experiencing driver or hardware related issues".
I have uninstalled just about anything that I think might be causing conflicts. I have scanned for malware. I have run chkdsk and sfc. I have all the latest updates from Windows Update. I have tried in Safe Mode with Networking but still get the same results.
OS is Vista Home Basic 32-bit SP2.
I'd be grateful for any advice that might help to resolve this please.

Re: Unable to connect to wireless network
By your post it seems as you can see other signals.
Try to log into someone elses signal to see if the box comes up asking for a key (this is diagnostics not hacking).
If it does ask for a key then your card is working.
If it fails then turn off the firewall and other security software on your laptop then try again.
If this fails post back and I will try to come up with a solution.

Thanks. No, I can't see any wireless networks at all.
However, I have now proved that the hardware is ok. I booted up from a Live Ubuntu CD and that was able to see and connect to wireless networks immediately. So, it definitely seems that some obscure software problem on Windows is causing this.
I'm begining to think of re-loading Windows from scratch but would love to hear of any other ideas before I go down that route. Thanks.

Re: Unable to connect to wireless network
Thank you. I have turned off the Windows Firewall and as far as I can see there is no other firewall installed. Other people have said that these symptoms can be caused by firewall problems.
I will try a few of the additional drivers next. I won't be able to do this for a couple of days when I'll report back. I appreciate the various replies.
