win9x crashes accessing vista shares

I could have sword I saw a solution to this problem posted here when I was away from home, but now I can't convince the search function to find me the working solution.

I have a windows 98SE machine, and a machine running Windows Vista 64 bit home premium.

Vista has no problems connecting to shares on the win98 machine.
I've solved the problem with the printer share being offline after restarting the computer thanks to a post here.

However, when I try to connect to a Vista share with Windows 98SE, windows 98SE locks up/hangs/crashes or whatever you want to call it. It doesn't matter if it's the real WIn98SE machine, a virtual machine on the Vista machine, or an ancient virtual machine running Windows 95 on my ancient PowerMac 6500/300 (that I replaced with the win98SE machine).
I've tried installing the NTLM2 package, and the DCOM package on win98.
I've tried the LMCompatibility level.
I've tried simple file sharing and enabling the guest account.

I can't get it to work.

A Windows XP virtual machine also has a long delay where it locks up for 15-30 seconds when trying to access a Vista share on the host OS. It seems to be related, whatever is making XP lock up crashes Windows 9x. The virtual machines prove that it's not just a question of greater processing power & memory, since the hardware setup on the virtual machines was equal.

I don't have any trouble connecting to shares on the XP virtual machine from anything, so I doubt it is a hardware problem, it's a Vista problem.

So, what was the solution to this problem? It's plagued me for 2.5 years. I thought I saw a possible solution posted here, but I apologize as I can't seem to dig up the correct post.
