Vista networking - Network 2

I have Vista and one computer, and one DSL modem. No wifi.

When I use Control Panel > Networking and click "Manage Networking Connections," it lists the LAN Connections and shows one item: Local Area Connection and the status says "Network 2."

Also, if I hover the mouse over the networking icon (near the clock) it says "Currently connected to Network 2...Access Local and Internet."

Why would it say Network 2? There's only one connection in the list.

My networking card is an Intel card that ends with "-2" - could that be it?

Thanks

Mines shows Belkin , i use a Belkin router and my ISP service runs through that, thus the name of that for me. Yours is showing a name of Network 2 because that is what it is named either by you or it named itself auto . Those are my thoughts, they will more than likely be others posting on this thread, i am sure one of us will have a reasonable answer for you.

Okay - just to make sure everybody knows, it says "Network 2" under "Status"

Under "Name" it just says "Local Area Connection."

Yard Dog, I just wanted to make sure you and everybody knew this. You may be right. Thanks for answering.

I just right clicked on Network 2 and clicked on Rename.
It allowed me to rename "Local Area Connection" and not "Network 2."

Oop, I went to Network and Sharing Center and clicked on Customize.
It showed a dialog box displaying "Network 2" as an editable field.
I guess Yard Dog was right all along.

I'd like to know what others think anyway.

Hello robertjc and welcome to the forums

I have attached a batch file that I would like you to download to your desktop and run as an administrator. This will reset all of your internet connections. Might work, might not. Worth a try though :)

Here is the code if you wish to inspect it before running it:

Code:
@Echo on
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ip reset all
echo
cls
cls
echo Script complete. System will now shut down. Close or save any open files before continuing.
pause
shutdown -r -t 1
del %0

Bill (Yard Dog) has helped excellently so far and this is the only thing I can think of that may help

Tom
