Ethernet slower than wi-fi -- HELP

Hello everyone!

I'm really new to this forum, I just registered to ask this question. I've been searching the web, but couldn't find an answer for this.

I have an HP notebook computer running Vista Home Premium (I think it is home premium... I'm not at home now and can't be sure) x64.

I recently had 30/3 (down/up) mbps internet installed at home. Works great with a desktop pc running XP, speedtest really shows 30/3.

However, if I run the same test on my notebook, I get 0.4/3 mbps if using Ethernet. Last night it occured to me that I should try the wifi... sure enough, on wifi I got 23/3 mbps.

I tried using two different cables and two different ethernet ports on the modem/router (btw, it's a Motorola SBG6580). I'm completely confused by this. I tried updating the ethernet drivers, but they are completely up to date. What is more, it detects the network as being 1GB ethernet.

I also tried using TCP optimizer from speedguide.net, but it didn't make a difference. I used a script they have there, no difference.

I'll hang on to the wifi for now, but I would love to see the ethernet working properly.

The ethernet card is NVIDIA nForce 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet. I'll be able to add more information when I get home if needed.

Any help will be much appreciated.

(just in case-- yes, I'm seriously considering moving to Windows 7, but the notebook came with a valid Vista license and a win7 license will be pretty hard on my budget)

Hello and welcome, try going to the manufacture site and see if there is a more up to date driver for the Card . That is , in my opinion , the best way to confirm you have the latest drivers for your hardware. Post back results of this please.

I just checked mine, i have Nvidia also, i went to Device Manager, opened the +sign on network adapters and right clicked to see properties on mine. In driver details i am seeing for my E-Machine a driver date of 8/12/2010 and a 73.3.5.0 for driver version.
Do you have another ethernet cable to swap out, it is quite possible that the ones you are using are bad, even though you say that you have switched cables around, maybe both were bad ?
There is one tutorial i have used , seems to give me quicker internet , not sure if it will help you or not : http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/72308-auto-tuning-tcp-ip-receive-level.html
Post back results please .

Thank you. Both cables were supposed to work just fine (one of them was the one I was using before, with the 3 mb connection, and it did great). I will swap with the desktop pc, which has shown 30mb speeds.

I'll let you know this evening my driver version.... it's different, that's for sure. Mine ended in .8.9.0

As for the autotuning, I had found that solution before. Tried disabling it and didn't work.

I just checked. Driver version is 67.8.9.0, dated 1/8/2008

I downloaded it as the latest from here: NVIDIA DRIVERS 15.23 WHQL

That's the first result ifyou google 'nforce ethernet drivers vista'

The driver search in the nvidia site only looks for graphic drivers,as far as I could see.

I don't know if that will make a difference, but I bought that computer in 2008

Most current is not always best, try to rollback from device manager.

Well, it didn't work. I installed the drivers and it continued showing the same driver version. I then uninstalled the drivers altogether and installed the new ones-- still no change. I restored the system just in case.

I'm still using the wifi connection
